Ok - this is a problem but not for me but if I can't find an acceptable answer I may get the cold shoulder from my wife.
I recently got a Vonage system for my area code of 281. My mother-in-law is saying that she is unable to call us without dialing a '1' so she's not happy that she has to call us long-distance. I spoke with Vonage cusomter care today and they said that everyone should have to dial 11 digits to call me regardless of their location. However I am able to dial just 10 digits on my cell phone, so does my wife and when she calls from the office she only has to dial 10 digits.
Now - here's the kicker. My mother-in-law has a 'metro' number. She lives in a town that is in an outlying area outside of Houston. I remember that my 281 area code did not list Houston and I'm wondering... in fact as I type this I bet I'm facing a switch issue. argh. I'm going to go see if I can get a new switch... I may have to change area codes.... anyway... if anyone has some feedback that would be helpful to me I would appreciate it. |

buy her a motorola cordless phone and program your number in for her. Then go ahead and program YOUR motorola for 11-digit dialing with up to 5 "local" area codes. Sorry, if that's not what you wanted to hear -- but we can call just about anybody with no sweat. We just put 'em in memory or do the 11-digit area code dialing so we can return calls in memory.

I had the same problem. I live in Tomball, TX and my family had to dial a 1 from Pasadena, TX. I made the mistake of putting Tomball as the city instead of Houston when I signed up for the number. I also noticed that the 832 area code on the Vonage web site has more areas as local numbers than 281. I changed the city to Houston and now as far as I know no one has had to dial a "1" calling me. I did not keep the same number, but had Vonage credit me the $10.00 for the number change. Hope this helps. |
