PostPosted: Tue Aug 16, 2005 4:56 pm    Post subject: 2 Routers - BFSR41 to RTP300-VD [Home Network] Reply with quote Back to top

Location:Azle, Texas
ISP: Charter - Cable
Download/Upload: 3meg down/256k up
Modem make and Model: Ambit Data Cable Modem - 60678EU
Vonage Adapter: RTP300-VD

Network Setup: - Cable line to Cable Modem > Cable modem ethernet cable to Linksys BFSR41v1 WAN port > PC ethernet to ethernet port 2 on BFSR41v1 > Ethernet cable from port 1 on BFSR41v1 to Internet port on RTP300-VD.
BFSR41 ip of 192.168.1.1
PC IP of 192.168.1.100
RTP300-VD ip of 192.168.15.1
BFSR41 holds my ISP's IP and DNS information. The RTP300-VD internet IP is 192.168.101

Problem:
Speratic - Unable to make outbound phone calls.

Heres the low down. I hooked everything up on Sunday. I was unable to make outbound phone calls. On Monday I called Vonage support. After 1 hour they had me fixed. Tuesday I was unable to browse the internet, checked the settings on the RTP300 and they had setup DNS 1 and DNS 2 to 216.115.31.40 and 216.115.24.230 which belong to Vonage. This was causing me not being able to browse the internet. I reset the router and got Charter DNS servers and everything was fine. I then noticed I could not make outbound phone calls again.

When I got home today I setup my network as described above in the Network Setup section. My BFSR41 has my Charter IP and DNS settings and the RTP300 pulled the Charter DNS settings as well, but has a internet IP of 192.168.1.101 with the default gateway of 192.168.1.1 which is normal. The RTP access the net through the BFSR41. And now my internet works and my phone works.... very weird.

Now, I would like to know 2 things.
1. Why is my phone working fine now...it wasn't earlier with Charter DNS settings, it had Vonage DNS and I was unable to access the internet.
2. Is my network setup correctly.

I hope I didn't confuse you guys. Here is a network diagram
http://webpages.charter.net/jiga/Diagram.JPG

Thanks for any help/explanations.

Your network setup seems fine.

How is your ISP? Please post the test results from our VoIP Speed Test

More importantly, do the test when you are having problems (can not make a call)

Also, what do you mean you can not make a call? What happens?

Like I said, it is working now but it is strange that it is as I posted in my original message.
My Results
Download 2,879,920 bps
Upload 228,072 bps
QOS 88%
RTT 29 ms
MaxPause 172 ms

When I am unable to make outbound calls this is what happens.
Get dialtone - Dial number - Silence.... and thats it. A minute later the person I tried to call will call me back asking if I just called. It rings on their end.

Just got an email from my wife. She states that now all the phone is doing is giving her a busy signal, no dialtone, just a busy signal.

Well, last attempt failed. Tried forwarding these ports:
SIP ports 5060 through 5061 using UDP protocol
NTP port 123 using UDP protocol
TFTP port 69 using UDP protocol
DNS port 53 using UDP protocol
RTP ports 10,000 through 20,000 using UDP protocol

And I am still having issues with outbound calls. Been a week, gave it a try, going to cancell.

What's the purpose for keeping the BEFSR41? Unless it is a wireless router it's perfectly useless in this setup unless you need to put it a good distance from the cable modem.

I'm going to assume you have a good reason to keep the BEFSR41 so here is what you do.

1. Disable DHCP on the BEFSR41, set it's LAN address as 192.168.1.253
2. Enable DHCP on the RTP300-VD and set it's LAN address as 192.168.1.254
3. Hook the RTP300-VD's Internet/WAN port to the cable modem. This will ensure that the QoS will at least make it to the cable company, it is then their job to handle it properly. My guess is the BEFSR41 is stripping that information when it NAT's the packets
4. Hook a cable from port 1 on the RTP300-VD to port 1 on the BEFSR41. DO NOT use the Internet/WAN port on the BEFSR41 as this will not produce the desired results.
5. Plug your client machines into either router, it doesn't matter as they both sit on the same network

In this setup, the RTP300-VD will dish out the DHCP requests to all clients on the network and will also be your broadband router. The RTP300-VD has every feature you should need in a broadband router anyway, so why put it behind something else. I've just described the exact setup I have at home and like you, I tried to set it up the other way and nothing but trouble. Put the RTP300-VD in front, you'll be much happier.

I had problems even with the RTP300 bein the only router on the network. Still issues with outbound calls.

It's already cancelled, to much of a headache for phone service.
