Happy day, Happy day!! I finally resolved my RT31P2 router problems. For about a year now I have had this router and since the day I installed it, it has been a headache. Several times a day it would just disconnect and reconnect for no real reason. My Install had the RT31P2 right behind my Motorola SB5120 Surfboard Cable Modem and that was it. No big complicated setup here. I work out of my home and the disconnects would disrupt my VPN connections to my corporate hosts and it could no longer be tolerated. So I fixed it! I spent $29 on a Motorola BR700 router and use the PT31P2 for nothing more than an analog terminal adaptor. It works great for that! As long as the RT31P2 has to do nothing more than make the Vonage service work then it seems happy. I wish I would have done something like this in the first place and not gone with the all eggs in one basket craze. I just think that these little Linksys routers for home network use don't have the processor and memory to do all the work for phone and data routing and processing combined. I am in the Voip phone business and in the business environment you have mega horsepower for these types of applications when you run them through the same box.
Just my two cents. |

rnclem, What messages were you getting on-screen when disconnect and connects would occur? |

Only message I got was from my NIC saying network cable was unplugged. I would look up and the lights on the RT31P2 would flash a couple of times and then my pc would say that the cable was plugged back in. In the mean time I would lose my VPN connection. |

Thanks Clem,
Believe you have just solved my problem, I am using SB4200 modem and the new Vtech 8100-2 phone with built router instead of a linsky, and keep getting same messages. Think its order time for a BR700 also.
Thanks, Lipps1948 |

Got the BR700 off EBAY, new, for $31.50 including shipping. Great little router and I have not had a burp since I switched it out. Sorry but I think the All-In-Ones are just trying to do too much. That is not a Hi-Tech approach but it was cheap and worked for me. |

This solution works as long as you're not on the phone whenever the RT31P2 decides to reset itself. I've had the issue as well. I used it behind a router for awhile but didn't like the lack of QoS. Initially, the disconnects happened several times a day but became a lot less frequent after updating the firmware.
I finally decided to call Vonage and let them know that the problem still persists though not as often and that I have a lot of background noise as well. They agreed to replace the router with an RTP300. I'm hoping that this solves both problems.

Lips, you may want to also get onto a 5100 series modem, as that seems to also be a bit more stable. |

Trowski, Tell me more or explain, my confusion is the SB4200 was very dependable until I installed the VTECH 8100-2 phone. This is the new broadband phone with 2 cordless phones. Now my on-screen message are (A network cable is unplugged) followed very quickly by (Local area connection is now connected). |

5100 series is a new modem, I think the latest is a 5120, but don't quote me. In gereral Voip performance seems to be improved when using it. Lipps, Vtech to me is a good idea, but since it is pretty new and really hasn't gone through the stress testing per se of a large consumer base there are bound to be issues such as you are having. Plus, buying the BR700 router may not fix your issue. It could be a firmware problem etc, or it sounds like it is reseting itself. |
