the easiest way I can think to explain it is firmware is the operating system of the router. just like you probably have windows to do things on your computer, the firmware runs on the router and tells it what to do. it also has a lot of options you can modify (such as opening ports). but why do you want to open ports?
Well i had to open ports because I run alot of game and voice communication servers for my favorite games and so we can chat when were playing in CAL (cyber athlete league). Or when a game simply dosn't have in game chat! If I update my Firmware will I have to go back and open my ports again? And what is the latest version for my rtp300 and where can i get it?

Well, let's see Rebook, there are a plethora of reasons why one would want to open a port. Shall I name a few, *Terminal Services *FTP *DNS *General remote access (PC Anywhere, etc.) *HTTPS *VPN *NNTP *Telnet Shall I go on?

you're the last person who needs to explain anything to me, and the question wasn't for you. to explain it since you're incapable of understanding my thought process, this poster wasn't even sure what firmware was, so it seems odd they would know about or want to open ports, thus the question.
