PostPosted: Sat Aug 13, 2005 3:51 pm    Post subject: Very low percentage of outgoing calls connecting Reply with quote Back to top

I am a newbie to this forum, so please excuse (and guide) me if I am posting incorrectly.

I am having issues with my Vonage IP service on outgoing calls. It sometimes takes 8 or 9 attempts to get through to a number we dial. This has been ongoing for us and is sometimes not an issue, though the one call one connection is a rarity for us.

Here is what I have going:

1. We are in Austin Texas
2. Our ISP is Time Warner Roadrunner Cable
3. Upload speed 361 Kbps download speeds 3.7 Mbps
4. Cable Modem is Toshiba PCX1100
5. Vonage adapter RT31P2
6. Setup of Network Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->Wireless Phone
7. Issue I am experiencing - difficulty placing calls, dropped calls, sometimes poor call quality
8. results from www.testyourvoip.com test call to Boston

Hello, I'm having the exact same issue. Most of my calls on the first, second, or third try will result in a message saying 'the number you dialed is invalid'. I get that dialing to land lines, cell phones, I even got it dialing the Vonage tech support tonight. I have a ticket open with Vonage about this, I'll post any findings.

Some of my calls get mis-routed to the wrong phone numbers too. When I dial (for example) 432-987-0566, it will get mis-routed to someone elses cell phone. When I check the dashboard, I see that something like 425-668-9788. It's roughly similar to what I dialed, but pretty far off.

sounds like the dtmf tones are not making it or are being distorted. the original poster has some packet loss which could easily account for it. many people (who do not have time warner) had a lot of problems with the pcx1100, but people with time warner don't seem to have the problems with it (since time warner fixed the issue on their network, but comcast and others did not). you can always try getting a new modem (time warner should switch it out for free). otherwise have them check your signal levels (which are probably fine) and try running www.pingplotter.com for a while to try to target the source of the problem.

I did some troubleshooting with tech support last night on this. Found out that my outgoing calls are fine when the phone is connected directly to the Vonage router. When I go through my house lines, I get the dialing difficulty. Looks like I have problems or noise on my lines. Bummer. My POTS line is disconnected at the demarc, so it's not a voltage issue.

Tech support put my router in debug mode. When dialing voicemail (*123), he saw that *133 was registered instead. All problems were gone after I plugged directly into the router.

Toshiba PCX1100

My experience is that the Toshiba PCX1100 is not very good. I would invest in a Motorola SB 5120 ($79 at compusa).

Being new to Voip I have not connected my Voip to my inside wiring. I found a deal on a wireless system able to handle four phones. But I suspect I will want to. I hope it doesn't degrade. I have not seen this problem. But thanks for posting. I won't panic and just remember to thank you if I see the problem when I make the connection.

Get rid of the Toshiba cable modem. Do a search on this website or a google search of PCX1100 packet loss and you'll find a ton of info.

I personally doubt the pcx1100 is the problem. I had one for months and there was no difference between it and the surfboard 5100 I got for the heck of it. like I said earlier, the pcx bug is isp fixable, and time warner fixed it. apparently no one else did though.

I had the same problem, tried all sorts of tweaks with technical support. Finally, they sent me a new adapter. No problems once we received the new adapter. Service works perfectly.
