Hi,
I use timewarner roadrunner cable to access the internet. I got my Vonage - motorola device yesterday. And I connected the device as per the instructions. I could get the IP phone to work without any problem. But my internet connection has got messed up. I am not able to access any website even if I am not on the phone. If I try to access a website, IE tries to access the website and on the status bar, it says opening page http://...., but it takes forever to open the webpage. I then removed the motorola device and directly connected by PC to the roadrunner modem. Everything works fine in that case. Has anybody else experienced this problem? Please advise.
Thanks |

Despite instructions from Vonage, the ATA needs to be behind a router. Check over the topics on this forum. Much discussion about the problem you are having. |

A couple questions about your setup. I'm assuming you had no router/firewall before geting Vonage. Also what operating system is your PC using (Linux, Windows 95, Windows XP, Mac OS X, etc...)
Also did the internet through the ATA ever work, or did it work for a while and then stop?
There could be a couple reasons why this is not working for you. It should be easy to figure out and fix with a little more information.

You may want to check to make sure that TimeWarner is not expecting the MAC address of your LAN card on your computer. I know of some cable providers that are requiring specific MAC addresses at each persons site. If this is the case you can change the MAC address of your Vonage ATA by logging into the address: 192.168.102.1. |

I have been having the exact same problem. I had this stuff for 2 weeks now and been trying to figure it out. I can't get customer service to help because everytime they reply to my emails they just copy and paste the crap from the manual and send it to me. I try to tell them that I did all that but I guess they can't comprehend that or they are just lazy or something...
The manual **** big time. The "just plug it in and go" setup instructions are the worst.
Anyways, now that I am done ranting, I have Windows ME and no router or firewall.

Yes. I dont have any firewall/router. All I have is the roadrunner cable modem - Motoral device VT1005 - PC. I have windows 2000 on the PC. Once I connect the motorola device, the internet starts malfunctioning. But without the motorola device, I can get on the internet without any problem.
Do I need a router before the motorola device? because this is what the customer service guy told me. I talked to him for nearly 45 minutes, he was not able to figure it out and then just told me to buy a router and see if it works!
Thanks

Before you buy anything else I would do the following.
Plug your computer into the PC port of the ATA (VT1005). Setup your WIndows 2000 box to a static ip address of 192.168.102.10 subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway of 192.168.102.1.
Next open up a browser to http://192.168.102.1. Click on the advanced tab and make sure the check box for enable NAT/DHCP is check. |

I tried to set the IP of the windows 2000 box to 192.168.102.10 as well as the subnet mask and gateway, but then the PC loses the internet connection totally. I am not able to ping any server or the motorola device.
When I use dhcp on the PC, my internet connection does not stop totally. It is very very slow. It does not give me the ''page cannot be found'' error. Instead it tries opening the page forever. I have tried switching browsers. No difference. I am able to ping machines out on the internet.
When I try bringing up the webpage of the motorola device (http://192.168.102.1), this takes very long as well. Please note that these happen while I am not using the phone. My setup - Roadrunner modem -> Motorola device -> PC( windows 2000). Has anybody else had this problem and solved it?
Thanks for all your help

Finally I got the problem solved. It seemed to be some problem in communication between the motorola ATA and my network card (Realtek PCI ethernet adapter). I put my router (Linksys 4-port) between the motorola ATA and my PC. The internet connection is back to normal and the phone works fine. I hope I do not face any more problems.
