internet connection stops working

Excellent glad to hear that! Sometimes networking can be a pain... at work once we spent a whole day trying to figure out why our server was having problems dropping packets. Turned out to be a bad network cable. Sometimes the most benign seeming thing causes the problem.

What speed/duplex did your network card run at, and the same for the router you replaced it with?

I also found the vt1005v would hang with a high upstream from the PC, so I'm wondering if somehow the internal buffers can't handle the load.

Maybe reducing the network card speed was enough to ease the load to the VT1005v?

I have a realtek RTL8139 PCI Fast ethernet adapter. The router I have is a Linksys 4-port router (BEFSR41). When I talked to their customer service rep., he was suggesting that my network card was probably having problems re-assembing the packets it was receiving from the motorola device. He said it was likely that the motorola device was reducing the packet size and this was confusing the network card. He was suggesting adjusting the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) on my network card. I havent bothered about adjusting this as having the router makes everything fine. Dont know if this is what you wanted to know
