PostPosted: Wed Aug 10, 2005 7:50 pm    Post subject: Best setup/QOS for RT31PT & BEFW11S4-V4 routers......... Reply with quote Back to top

I have RT31PT Vonage router & the BEFW11S4 wireless router (both linksys) hooked together. Everything is working fine until eDONKEY is running & I use the phone at the same time. I have 3000/256 charter cable ISP service. I know that the problem is that eDONKEY is hogging the upload & I also know I need a properly setup QOS. I have my RT31PT set to static behind the BEFW11S4 set to DHCP. I would like to keep my BEFW11S4 wireless in front if I could because all my pc's wireless & ethernet/wired are through it. My question is, are there any firmware upgrades out there with QOS for the BEFW11S4 or do I need the RT31PT in front with QOS turned on it? If so what is the best setup & setup details? If someone knows another way or a better way please give advice.
Thanks

I'm almost positive the BEF series routers don't support QoS regardless of whatever firmware version you're running on them. If you want QoS, you're probably stuck putting the RTP300 in front of the BEF router. I'm not sure how good the RTP300's QoS is 'though. I will say, the WRT54G & WRT54GS routers both have amazingly good QoS on them. Even when I have 10 people hammering away on my FTP server, I don't get any glitches in my phone calls.

Im not buying yet another router. I am happy with my setup I am just not using QOS at all right now. For some reason something has changed with Vonage lately. I have had Vonage for at least 6 to 8 months & used the same setup while using overnet or edonkey & the phone at the same time it used to just cut out a little here & there for the person on the other end; my end always sounds fine. But now just recently something is different with Vonage because when I am using edonkey & take a phone call it will completely die out or just forward the call to my cell. It used to never do any of this. I hate to say it guys but it looks like our nice little Vonage service is degrading from being oversold or they are having tons of technical problems or something. But back to the question at hand; if I have to put the RT31PT in front what is the best way to do it. I will be running 2 or 3 pc's by ethernet & one laptop by wireless. Right now they are all through the BEFW11S4. I need detail setup specifications..................
Thanks

I would suggest that you not be so quick to blame Vonage for your issues. It could very well be a problem with Charter as well. If there is a little problem with both Charter and Vonage then your problems could be exasperated.

Regarding the call quality issue and upload bandwidth, you can do a number of things to improve them.

First, I would suggest using bandwidth saver and reducing the bandwidth taken up by your phone to 50 kbps instead of the standard 90 kbps (since I did this, my issues with call quality have been greatly improved). That is the quick and dirty first solution I'd try. You log into your vonage.com website and go to features. You will find bandwidth saver as one of your features.

If the above does not significantly improve your ability to make or receive calls while using eDonkey, then your next step would be to switch the two routers.

In order to do that, what I did was I converted my wireless router to just a wireless switch/AP. You do this by connecting from the wireless router LAN port 1 to the LAN port 1 of the rt31p2. Then you disable DHCP on your wireless router. I also changed the ip address on the wireless router to be on the same subnet but outside the range of ip addresses given out by the rt31p2 so say 192.168.15.150...

The QoS on my rt31p2 is currently set to 512 kbps. You can play around with that until you are happy.

You will now have to enable DHCP on your rt31p2 and connect from the "internet" port of the rt31p2 to your sb4100.

I would personally plug in two wired computers to the rt31p2 remaining 2 LAN ports and use the wireless router for your laptop and the remaining wired pc.

hope this helps, mundy5

How I deducted that it could very well be Vonage is more than one reason. 1. I haven't changed a thing about my setup at all & I used to have great service until just recently. 2. There have been alot of other people from different places all over, with different isp's & with different setups having service problems; That would mean if it was Charter or my end then it is very ironic. 3. I have had Charter Cable Broadband for years now & it has always been flawless in my area. 4. The fact that lately Vonage has been putting up service announcments frequently that blatently state they are having specific problems in specific areas. I don't know but Vonage saying they are having problems may mean that Vonage is having problems. It is possible that my problem is something other than Vonage however it is improbable..............

I have thought of using the bandwidth saver but I thought lowering it would actually hurt my connection since the problem I am having is clearly edonkey hogging my upload speeds; however it is worth a try. I have also thought of limiting the upload speed of edonkey but then edonkey will cut back my download speed since it works on the reward system. I may try it anyway just to see. I will only swap the routers around as a last resort probably. It looks like I have it pretty well figured out I just wanted to see if someone had thought of something I hadn't.

I'm not saying that Vonage is free of any quilt. However, all I am saying is that one needs to take into account all possible reasons for the problems encountered. In my case, the vast majority of the call issues have arisen because of my ISP not Vonage, though there have been exceptions.

I don't understand why bandwidth saver would hurt your upload speed. It is trying to lower the bandwidth usage of your Voip service so that more upload bandwidth would be available for other internet services. I think you are misunderstanding the concept of bandwidth saver for Vonage or I am misunderstanding what you are saying.

It never hurts to give it a try. If it doesn't help, then all you need to do is reset back to where it was. Isn't that worth a try?

I just thought lowering vonages bandwidth would have a large affect on the sound quality due to not enough bandwidth. I didn't know how much Vonage required for clear service but I went to the site & read the bandwidth saver FAQ & it says that normal, medium & high setting differences are hardley distinguishable by most people. I didn't know that Vonage required so little bandwidth or course I want to try it out first & make sure setting it to normal-30kb or medium-50kb sounds good to me. I hope normal-30kb sounds good because that's what I will leave it on. Maybe then eDONKEY KONG will have enough to satisfy its glutten appetite or I will have to put it on a diet................

I will still probably switch routers if I have to to get QOS because im sure it would be much better with it.................

Thanks for the advice mundy5................. I just realized we have very similar setups..................
