PostPosted: Wed Aug 10, 2005 7:16 am    Post subject: How much Echo is to much.....using the RTP 300 Reply with quote Back to top

I am new to Vontage. Hooked up everything with no problems. Set up is as follows.... Charterpipeline Cable modem 3Mbps downstream and 256Kbps upstream > RTP 300 > computer. Originally I was using a Dlink switch box for my home network (all hard wired) but hooked up all four computers directly to the RTP 300. All are working great. Line one is going to house lines with 3 phones, 1 tivo and one fax connected. All lines and equipment work.
My problem is that on every call either incoming or out going the reciever hears a echo. Sometimes it is really bad where they can hear every word they just said and sometimes it is just the last word or so. Sound from my end is perfect. I have tried everything i can thing of to resolve the issue. Changed phones (I am using Panasonic KX-TG5571 with 4 hand sets and 1 900mzh protable and one plain corded phone.) All of them have the same echo on the reciever end. I have pluged directly into line one and not used the home wiring and I have rebooted the modem. Firmware on the modem is is 10000.37 the lastest one. Here are my test results

The information below explains why your call quality score (MOS) was less than perfect.

Are there any particular types of numbers which you get this echo with moreso than others? For example, does it happen more often if you're calling businesses, cell phones, residential lines? With no internet activity from your computers, do you still experience the problems? The RTP300 has an echo canceller on it, and personally, I've yet to receive an echo on mine. If your internet connection is rather saturated (or your ISP's oversold the bandwidth, which is very common with cable providers), it might induce delays. Don't expect the ISP to be up front & honest about this part. I'd suggest trying PingPlotter (www.pingplotter) or doing a few good 'ol fashion traceroutes and see where the problem lies.

No it is on all calls...cell, business, residential. When I call Vonage they were looking to see if the echo suppression was turned on and they could not find it....maybe that is the problem. I also have noted that the echo is worse on my Panasonic 5.8 phones...still there on all the others but worse on the Panasonic.

I believe those Panasonic 5.8Ghz phones transmit the audio in digital form, if so that adds another delay to the audio in both directions, which would compound any echo problems you might have. I'm still suspecting a problem on your internet connection, most likely your ISP or their upstream provider. I'm well over the 1,000 minute mark and still haven't hit any echo issues yet with my RTP300.

Went to Best Buy and bought all of their phone brands with expansion sets that can expand up to 8 phones and it ended up that the cheapest one( Motorola 5.8 mzh MD760) was the one that had no echo! That being said....I now have to take back the 3 other phone systems Rolling Eyes Best Buy is going to LOVE ME !!! Eek

Ah... I'm glad to hear it wasn't the RTP300, as so far I've had absolutely amazing sound quality from it. The Uniden Tru8xxx series seems to be the forum favorite, and mine as well... Haven't tried them on the Vonage line yet, but will when I get back down to my other place.
