I tried taking my RT31P2 with me from the US on an international trip in my carry-on bag, along with a phone.

The airport security people just freaked out, really. They didn't know what it was, could not figure out why I had a phone in my bag, and were not going to let me on the plane until I *explained* the whole thing. Go ahead and try explaining Voip to some guy making minimum wage with an IQ of about 80. I managed to get on the plane after saying things like "well - this is for making phone calls back to the US by using the internet - I need to be able to call my family without getting huge charges", etc. I was warned "don't turn that on while you are on the plane." Yeah, right. Sad

Ok, so on the next trip, it all went in my checked luggage. This turned out to be a bad idea, since when I retrieved my bag it had clearly been gone through (stickers all over it), and a lot of stuff was stolen - not the RT31P2 or the phone, but a lot of expensive clothes and shoes were - gone. You don't want them opening your bag if it can be avoided.

So - the question is - what the hell does one take on the plane that doesn't make them go nuts ?

I have travelled with my adapter once but with other networking equipment quite often and have never had an experience like yours.

What type of phone are you carrying with you?

Nothing special - just a small compact wired phone to plug into my adapter.

The phone didn't bug them that much, since they could see it was just a phone. It was the adapter that really upset them a lot.

I've not had any problems, but I do very neatly coil up the wires and have them separate from the equipment so that it's plainly visible that the wires aren't connected to anything. Actually, the biggest problem I've ever encountered was about 10 years ago in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (There's got to be a reason why the ICAO code for that airport/city is KRAP) with a lowly little QuickCam. I tried to explain that it was used for videoconferencing, which totally blew their minds and just created more of a hassle for me. They also grilled me over having 2 cell phones and an alphanumeric pager. Strangely enough, they didn't say a single thing about the Polycomm speakerphone in the same bag. I guess they thought it was some sort of new-fangled boomerang.

I've since learned that it's easier to tell them it's "computer networking equipment". Most of them are sufficiently ignorant to hear "computer" and walk away.

I've traveled with my RT31P2 and cordless phones in my luggage and it was fine. When I took a wireless AP and switch through security in my carry on they were interested in the antennas for the AP, but they looked at them and sent me on my way.
