Post subject: My Theory
I have an idea about what is happening. Maybe I shouldn't post this because I guess this is how rumors start. So first I want to say that I didn't hear this anywhere and I don't have any inside information.
I think they've had so much bad experience with these silver boxes, WRTP54G and RTP300 that they've decided to just send out their remaining excess RT31P2's until the Motorola VT2442's are available. The Motorola VT1005 was always solid for me and most of my friends in the Bahamas who use
Vonage
, and I think most people have had good experience with Motorola ATA's. I'm planning to wait and see what happens next. I'm not going to invest anymore time or effort in the silver box, unless I see better comments posted.

With the latest firmware revision, I don't have any probs with my RTP300 except that *99 doesn't work, which is minor. The RTP300 & WRTP54G are both re-labelled Texas Instruments products, and Texas Instruments usually makes quality stuff. Like I said in earlier posts, the hardware seemed very solid on this router, just had dodgy firmware, which they're obviously working on, and the latest revision seems pretty close to bug-free. This is in contrast to the RT31P2 routers which had cheap hardware (imho) and decent software, but only because it had gone through several firmware revisions. No amount of firmware can overcome bad hardware 'though. I should also note that the new Motorola VT2442 is also a Texas Instruments product, just like the Linksys RTP300.

I think VonageTPA is right. The RTP300 is a good piece of hardware but the firmware is a work in progress. They've already fixed a lot of the issues. I was in a hurry to upgrade to the RTP300 because of the reboot issue and the background noise issue I was having with the RT31P2.
I still feel that the RT31P2 is a piece of trash. I'll be sure not to refer anyone else to
Vonage
until they stop shipping it again.

Mazz, how has the RTP300 been for you in terms of sound quality compared to the RT31P2? Even though I had 2 RT31P2's, they always had line noise & interference in the background, even with just a single line-powered phone connected to the RT31 TA. The kicker is that I have a home recording/broadcast studio with some rather sensitive mic & turntable pre-amps, and don't run into any problems with them. (Last time I measured my noise floor, it was around -121dB) Even my AM radio tuner works well without interference from the computers & studio gear. Yet the RT31P2 didn't. The RTP300's very quiet, obviously not -120dB, but far superior to my Verizon land line.

I have spent the better part of today on the phone because the 31P2 that I got today they sent me could not get an IP address off my modem. The great tech rep I was speaking with said that they just started again..

Post subject: I hear you
I hear you....
Friday night when I called and requested 300's that is when my 31's stopped totally....
I called liek 3 different levels and asked if it was possible that my existing router were disabled ealry...
2 techs assured me no... one tech told me I dont have the Routers that I have (that the system still showed my old ones which were retunred along time ago) and that the ones I have should never have worked and that 2 lines had the same MAC address...
So now I have 4 31's all with noisy and crappy quality and all 4 get real hot....
I wish they could fix this - it is getting to th point where the regular phone company money is worth it atleast it works 99.9% of the time.
