I have a personal email server and I'm having trouble getting it to work with the Vonage router.

I've forwarded the SMTP and POP ports to my computer and I can receive mail sent to my server, but I can't send mail out. I can't find any setting that would keep the router from passing mail out to the internet, and I don't know why it won't.

Up untill now I was using a D-link wireless router, and everything worked fine through it. How much will it affect the phone line to route the Linksys through the D-link and how do I set it up?

I think this would be a bad idea since the e-mail traffic from your mail server would then no longer be under the control of the QoS from your Vonage/Linksys router. This could increase choppiness in your phone calls.

But this would be a good idea for troubleshooting to rule out the possiblity that your ISP just started blocking outbound port 25, which is becoming more and more common (since many spammers use SMTP servers behind DSL or cable). If this has happened, a workaround is to use your mail server just for inbound mail, and use your ISP's SMTP server for outbound mail. Another workaround is to configure your mail server to relay all outbound mail through your ISP's SMTP server.

Even if you get your outbound SMTP working again, be aware that more and more mail servers are proactively blocking mail coming from mail servers on DSL or cable - even with static IP. This happened to me, so even though my outbound SMTP works fine, I use an external server for my SMTP traffic and my local mail server just for inbound SMTP and for my IMAP.

Good luck,
Brian

I don't know what happened but I re-setup the network with the Vonage router up front and used the same settings I tried the first time and it's working. I've got no explanation.

My ISP doesn't block port 25, and they better not start. The only people I have trouble emailing are AOL email addresses (they block port 25 from residential IPs) and people with Roadrunner addresses (I use RR and their email servers reject port 25 traffic that originated inside their network unless it's coming from another RR server)

I hate "block everything" as a method of spam control. That's what happenes when ISPs are too lazy to implement something better. That's one of the whole reasons I started my own server, because I want to make the decisions about what email gets filtered. I think everyone should be running their own server. In fact I'd love for the next generation of routers to be able to run slimmed down versions of Apache and Postfix (and a SD slot for storage). That'd be the perfect solution for home users that want to run their own stuff and don't expect much traffic.
