You can not port a landline to a wireless service, at least I can not. Maybe you know something I don't.

In SE Wisconsin you can port a land line number to a wireless carrier. I just figured that was a nationwide thing, but maybe not.

In detail they are saying that my number reports as outside of my service area and they can't override it. It also does not respond with the service area it is assigned to (blank response) so we can't fudge the physical address to match.

Dan

In your message you stated that you can't port a landline to a Cell phone.

After waiting for 2 months for Vonage to port my phone # to Vonage I gave up and kept the number that was assigned to me.

Then I found out I can buy a small Wireless Tracfone and have my home phone # transferred to it.

Instead of paying Bell South $32.00 a month I am now paying Tracfone about $8.00 to $10.00 a month to keep my home phone Number.

Thanks for the help you said that you was going to give me that I never got.

I am happy with Vonage but the # portability sections stinks up the whole system.

It is odd, I had someone in my office call around, Cingular said yes, Verizon said no.

I do know that it use to be imposable, as I tried 2-3 years ago when I was traveling.

Why would you spread arround information that is 2-3 years old. If you do this for a living then should you not find out answers before you give them. How does anyone know if any of your answers are not valid any more.

I've called my Cell provider (Sprint) they can do the transfer no problem.

Just so we can all feel better ( This is not a dig at your) can you just go and find out what is the CURRENT policy on number transfering from Vanage(from the department that does it for a living), also I don't think that Daug is making this up just to get a croud, why don't you use him as a test case and see what is wrong with his numeber (play a game - see if you can transfer it back to vanage from vanage Smile.

Turbo13: The phone calls to Cingular and Verizon happened 6 hours ago, sorry if I was not clear on that.

I would have spoke to someone at Vonage on Dougs behalf, hopefully to get him some assistance, but he has lost the number as he states, he has a new number.

In general I guess I can just drop this and not transfer the number.
But I see no reason why Doug would be making all this up, and I see a definite issue with loosing your number. I am in a position to recommend to a business to transfer their phone number(s), but if they will not be able to transfer it back if things go south that would kill advertising materials, and old customers ....
This would be a deal breaker for most people I think, so a precise statement from someone who can back that claim up would be beneficial.
From what I see on these forums, people get different answer every time they get a different person on line.
The only thing that sticks is some statement in the user agreement, or from someone at Vanage that later could be used liable. Although I believe that your answers are from the heart and you believe them, they would serve no purpose if later we find out that you made a mistake. Then all you could say is sorry, and all a customer can do is loose a phone number....

Turbo13:

Did someone suggest Doug made this story up? If so, I missed that one.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It works like this: You can port your number back and forth to any carrier that provides services in your rate center.

But the moment you change your number or cancel your account, your number is no longer your number

This is not only how it works with Vonage, but with all LEC's, CLEC's...

Is it possible to request a number withing a bank of numbers ?
Or to put it even more directly can a person request a number close (numericaly) to a given other number.
During sign up there are no option to request this. (one can get in the area code, but thats it). Its not easy but with the SBC here you can get them to assign a certain number next to another number...

Thanks

Unfortunately, no. They are all loaded into a data base and pulled in numeric order.

That would however make for a nice post in the feature request forum which I know is read by Vonage.
