PostPosted: Tue Aug 09, 2005 3:44 am    Post subject: RTP300 blinking internet light? Reply with quote Back to top

Just set up new router (rtp300), had to replace the 1st one they sent me (rt31p2) that kept droping the phone connection.

I got the rtp300 router going and followed the install step.
- it said after powering up the router wait for the internet light to stop blinking before turning on PC, may take a few mins to 10 mins.

...well
1)it's never stopped blinking. (still blinking right now) ever 4th-15th rythmic blink it fast studder blinks
2) internet connection is fine
3) after about 20mins, the phone1 light became active with nothing plugged into either of the router's phone jacks
4) plugged the phone in and it works fine.

so my questions are ...
1) is the above normal
2) what's the a blinking & solid lit interent light mean

btw: Firmware Version: 1.00.37

The blinking usually means that the router is sending or receiving packets of information. I have found that it is "normal" for the internet light to never really stop blinking. Even if you do not have any computers turned on I think the router will send a heartbeat of some sorts to the Vonage servers to let them know your router is still alive and well.

Bottom line, I think you are fine. Wink

yeah I'm very surprised the instructions say that. I bet that will confuse every person who has never had any experience with a router. personally I think it's a misprint and is supposed to read power light.

The light blinking simply means constant connectivity of your system to the internet"always on".

Yup, it says internet light, but only says this on the modem only installation guide, and not the one with an existing router. So, maybe using the router with a PC means it'll interfere with the firmware update process?

The tech at Vonage misspoke. That person should have told you to keep an eye on the power light of that router. When the power light is blinking, it is most likely downloading that firmware you had received. Internet light will blink when it talks to the cable/dsl modem on the WAN side of the RTP300.

Actually, the Vonage rep (and documentation) are correct about the blinking activity LED, but they obviously forgot about how much random chatter there is on the cable modem subnets. The only time the power light flashes on the RTP300 is when it's actively updating the firmware (not during the downloading of it) and when it's booting up.

[I]

I've gathered that the quick set up guide is off, saying to wiat unti the internet light to stop blinkning ... I think it is suppose to say wait till it starts to blink, or stop "rapidliy" blinking.

Right now it blinks every 1/4 of a second normally, and this seem normal for everyone else with this router.

Now about the phone1 light coming on after about 20 mins, must have updating firmware and activating the phone port on the router. And phone1 light came on to let the user know that the phone feature on the router is active and to use phone1 port.

When I plug the phone line in to the phone2 port , I don't get a dial tone and a recording comes on says, ...
" Your phone may be pluged into the incorret phone port please try the other port. please try the other port ... login to your web account to check the status of your account..."
And also the phone1 light stays lit if I unplug the phone from phone1 port.

So I guess if I get a second line it would come through through to phone2 port
