Post subject: Use on Satellite Internet?
I had a chance to evaluate a new personal satellite service available since July 2005. Latency is pretty crazy (625 ms pinging google.com for example) but otherwise usable.
Using my RT31P2 router I tried to place outgoing calls over the satellite connection. It might have been a symptom of recent problems but I kept getting "All circuits are busy" on the handset. By comparison, I could receive calls on the connection where my voice echoed on the handset about half a second after I spoke.
Now the bandwidth on the device I tested was pretty pathetic - 512 kbps downstream and 128 kbps upstream with that 625 to 700 ms ping time I mentioned. There are higher levels of service up to 2 mbps / 512 kbps available, though I've been warned they have the same latency - no worse than satellite phone service is like anyway.
Is there any way to get Vonage's service operating over this type of connection?

Vonage
will probably work... but voice quality would be horrible (a lot of stutters).
Check:
www.testyourvoip.com
to test your connection quality. It should give a you a rough idea of how well
Vonage
will work.
BTW, another thing you can try is to download SJPhone (www.sjlabs.com) or use MSN Voice Chat and try a PC to PC call with a friend. If SJPhone OK...
Vonage
should be fine.

No way. You might be able to get it to work for listen-only calls, but forget about talking. And forget about touch tones working.
I think this would be a very, very frustrating experience.
Sorry.
