This keeps getting stranger...

Reebok - the instructions definitely say "make sure the RTP300 Router's Internet light (on the front of the device) has stopped blinking before you continue." This is after you have plugged everything in but before you turn on the computer.

VonageTPA - I tried what you said and the phone 1 light stopped blinking (went to solid) but not the internet light (it kept blinking). I plugged in the phone, picked it up and there was a dial tone. I called my cell phone and it worked. Then I tried to call from my cell phone to the Vonage phone and it went straight to voicemail. Then I picked up the Vonage phone again and there was no dialtone and the phone 1 light is blinking again.

Any ideas? Customer service was NOT helpful. Thanks...

Just repeated the whole experiment and same thing - the phone 1 light is solid for a brief time and then it starts blinking and I lose dial tone. The phone 2 port does not work at all - when I pick up the phone a recorded message says it's connected to the wrong port.

The Phone light should blink approximately twice a second when the phone is in use/off hook. It'll blink slowly (0.5Hz) when there's voice mail waiting.

Any idea what firmware version your router's running? (should show up in the upper left corner if you go to http://192.168.15.1/ )

The router will keep trying to update its firmware until it gets the latest version, which I believe is 1.00.37.

It says 1.00.29 when I go to that link. Is that really outdated? I don't know why they would send me something outdated (I just got it in the mail today). So is it trying to update and for some reason failing?

The phone 1 light is blinking (I guess about 2x per second, like you said) constantly. It is never solid, unless I unplug everything and then plug in just the internet cable. Then it is solid for about a minute before it starts blinking again. The internet light never stops blinking also.

Any ideas? I'm going to try tech support again in the morning, but they weren't that helpful today.

I forget offhand which version mine came with, but I think it was ~1.00.20 or something along those lines. It automatically updated to 1.00.37 and that's where I'm at.

Okay, try this... unplug everything but the internet & power cable and power-cycle the router. Once you plug the router back in to power, let it sit there for 30 minutes without touching it. It won't update if the phone ports are in use, which yours appears to be.

Next, what type of phone are you using? If the phone light stays constant when the phone isn't plugged in, then the phone's suspect. Is there another phone you can try with the router? A bad phone would give you the problem of allowing you to dial one call but no further calls (because it hasn't hung up yet) and which is why calls would go to voice mail (phone's off-hook/busy, so it forwards to VM)

My RTP300 shipped with 1.00.29 and upgraded itself to 1.00.37 the first time I hooked everything up.

I would say that something is wrong with your RTP300, or it is having problems connecting to Vonage.

I tried what you said, letting it sit for 30 minutes. After about 5 minutes the solid phone light came on (even though phone was not plugged in). I let it sit the full 30 minutes and then plugged the phone in. Immediately the phone light started blinking (even though phone is not in use) and there is no dial tone.

I am using a Uniden 2.4GHz Digital cordless phone. It is brand new. I am willing to try getting a very basic, corded phone to see if it makes a difference.

Is it normal for the internet light to never stop blinking, even when the computer is off?

The phone light is supposed to come on steady when the phone adapter is ready for use. It indicates that the phone adapter has succesfully contacted Vonage and it knows it's phone number, etc. It's supposed to blink only when in use. I'd try another phone to verify the problem. It seems to be the phone, as the phone adapter is behaving without the phone connected to it. You might want to physically look at the phone ports on the back of the RTP300. none of the 4 gold pins inside should be touching. They'll be very close, but touching will short them out.

The internet light blinks in response to any internet traffic that hits it from the outside world or your computer. Depending on your IP, you'll find yourself getting a lot of unsolicted packets from various people. Most of the time they're computer worms trying to spread, but I also see my fair share of "script kiddies" trying to hack into anything that'll respond back to them. It's "normal" operation of the RTP300.

My RT31P2's Internet light blinks constantly. According to ethereal, it's mostly broadcast traffic on the cable network... and most of that is DHCP broadcasts from all the other modems.

Okay, here's the final verdict. I called customer service (for the 3rd time) and they finally were helpful. They transferred the line from the phone 1 jack to the phone 2 jack and it works now. They said phone 1 could have been corrupt or something, they don't know.

The bottom line is it works now and I'm a happy camper.
