PostPosted: Sat Aug 06, 2005 1:27 pm    Post subject: Network slowdown? Reply with quote Back to top

I've set up the Linksys RT31P2 through my belkin wireless router.
I hooked up the linksys to the Belkin F5D7231-4 wireless router, which then goes to the cable modem.

The internet connection doesn't seem too slow (5.2 M down and 340 K up) but it seems a lot slower than it was, and more importantly the LAN is slooooow.
Finding the printer (wireless) takes as much as 30 seconds.
I can't see a reason that ading the Linksys after the belkin would slow down the system since everything else connects to the belkin...
any ideas folks?

not sure why that would happen, but can you or have you tried putting the rt31p2 first in line (directly after the cable modem)?

Did you disabled the DHCP server on the RT31P2?

would that cause some type of problem? I never disabled dhcp on my rt31p2, and assume it doesn't matter since it's not serving anything anyway, and even if it was serving, it would be transparent to the first network (the belkin network in this case).
I haven't noticed any issues with my network setup similarly, so I'm curious if the dhcp server on a router that has nothing plugged into it could possibly cause a problem.

My RT31P2 has the remote administration enabled and is plugged in another router, I don't know if in this case the device could conflict with another DHCP server on the network but I saw somewhere else in this forum that it was best to have a single DHCP server on a lan so no conflict between two server could happen... So I disabled the DHCP on it and it act as a switch if a computer is plugged in it...

ah I see. yes I read those other posts too, and it's helpful if you have devices hooked up to more than one router and you want them all to have similar ip's and to be able to talk to each other, but besides that I don't think it matters. I used double dhcp for a while until I got a new router with no problems.

Thanks, that may have been the issue, both routers had dhcp on.
I disabled the dhcp on the Linksys and the network seems better but I'll give it some time before I start crowing.
I didn't want to run the belkin through the Linksys because , well, the belkin is a better router, and I've got my network all neatly configured... Confused

Now I just have to figure out what it's MAC address is so I can turn mac addressing bac on.

Thanks all, this forum is a great resource!
