My husband ordered Vonage to use in his home office and left me to set it up since I know a little more than he does about computers. Here is the problem though...
Our internet access comes through our cable modem gateway, which is located in our living room. We then have 2 computers with wireless internet connections (the one in his office, where we want to set up the phone, uses a wireless-g network adapter).
The phone adapter we were sent is the RT31P2 (not wireless) which, if I understand things correctly, has to be directly connected to the phone, the computer, and the cable modem. But given our setup at home, its impossible to do this (I really don't want to mess with having a cable jack installed in his office unless I absolutely have to). So my question is, can I make this work with the hardware I have? Or would I have an easier time if I got the WRT54GP2 wireless adapter or some other adapter (and then, would I simply connect to the computer and the phone to the adapter, and it would get the internet connection through the wireless capability)?
If the WRT54GP2 is the right option for me, do I have to get the Vonage-ready model, or can I get the regular one? There is an $80 price difference between the two models.
Thanks in advance for your help! |

Off the top of my head, I'd say you have a few options without running extra cables:
-put the Vonage adapter in the living room and use a cordless phone extension in the upstairs office.
-put the Vonage adapter in the living room and use the existing home phone wiring to distribute the phone signal to the office.
-use a wireless bridge or gaming adapter in the office to plug the RT31P2 into.
-if you have an unused hardwired network card in the office PC, you could try configuring internet connection sharing on the wireless adapter and connect the RT31P2 to the wired NIC (klugey, but you might have the stuff hanging around the house to give it a try). |
