I have a server farm at my one residence, which sits in the utility room, well-soundproofed & light-proofed from the rest of the place. 5 servers in there, with plans for more as I expand. In the studio, I have my workstation, which is obnoxious, but necessary. (12-bay case, 2TB of storage, dual RAIDs, 4 monitors, etc) Despite having 10 fans, I've managed to keep the noise down (using 120mm fans @ 1/2 RPM) to somewhat reasonable levels (~40dBA) BUT, there are absolutely NO computers in my bedroom. I value darkness & silence when I'm sleeping, mainly because that's the only time I get to enjoy it. At my other place I just have a lowly PIII-650Mhz laptop.. PCAnywhere's great!
With where you're planning on putting the router, the lights would be pretty dim hitting your eyes....but would illuminate the ceiling quite well.

I got my replacement RTP300 today via DHL. It was a snap to setup (like the RT31P2), but I agree with the opinion that the firmware could use some polishing.
It shipped with firmware version 1.00.29 and immediately updated to 1.00.37. Hopefully with a few firmware updates the rough spots will be ironed out. It would be even better if the folks at Sveasoft would start looking into porting their firmware to this baby...

Post subject: RTP300 Case pretty hot
I keep reading in these threads that the RTP300 runs alot cooler that the older phone adapters. This is my 1st experience with any phone adapter and router and my feeling is the RTP300 case, particularly the area around the Linksys Logo, is getting pretty hot. Is this normal and when you guys say it runs cooler did the others get really, really hot? I just signed up for

and have had it for 2 days trouble free but just feel the RTP300 is getting too hot and want to know if that is normal......I don't want this thing to burn out on me...

Post subject: Is my RT31P2 ok or not?
I have had to jump through many hoops in order to get my RT31P2 router configured correctly. I hope it's O.K. now.
What is all this talk about a newer better router? Is the RTP300 actualy mare 'bug-free' than the one I have (RT31P2)?
Also, my download speed with out the router is about 512kbps, but with it it is around 200 kbps. Is this correctable, or is it normal?
I've been on the phone and lowered my packet size/quality to 30 down from 50, down from 90. Also the Linksys operator told me to reset the MTU from 'disable', to enabled at 1400, (further to 1300 if this didnt help). Can anyone answer if this should really help?
Thanks

Do you have yours oriented vertically or horizontally? If horizontal & you have no real "breathing room" for it, you might find it to be a bit warm, but it's nothing compared to how hot the RT31's ran. I believe someone on the forum measured the temp of the RT31 with an IR thermometer and got a reading of 130F or similar.
To Pickalow: I'd stick with the RT31 if it's been working for you. As far as download speeds go, check out the QoS settings under the Applications and Gaming tab of the router's web page. Make sure the values you have in there match your connection. I don't have one in front of me anymore, so I don't remember the exact fields you have. On my WRT54GS, there's places to enter both upstream and downstream parameters. Also, I see you are using Shaw (cable?) internet. Try verifying that you really are getting a 512kbps download speed using one of the online speed tests. Cable internet provider quality varies widely by time of day demand, so if you're going to try it, do them consecutively to get the most accurate result.

Post subject: My RT31P2 router is ok... it's my ISP
My ISP is the problem. They use modems with DOCSYS 1.0 or 1.1, not the suggested (required?) 2.0 or higher. This ****, as there are all kinds of wacky things going on with my service.
Also, thanks to 'vonageTPA' for the info - I've done speed tests and they do vary, and I've reduced my Qos and the MTU setting as well. This seems to help, but the problem is as you say, the time of day demands. Sometimes I'm fine for a while, but then suddenly it gets choppy and stays that way for a while, even upon retying the call.
Seems in this case it's the ISP's fault, not Vonages.
Thanks again!
