PostPosted: Mon Aug 01, 2005 10:38 pm    Post subject: Echo Help Reply with quote Back to top

I'm using a WRTP54G with a Panasonic KX-TG5566 phone, on Comcast cable in the SF Bay Area. I'm having a echo problem which is driving my callers crazy. I've played with the bandwidth meter, had the caller adjust the volume on their phones, but still am fighting the problem. I currently have the meter set at normal. Does anyone have any tips to help reduce or eliminate the echo? I ran the Voip Speed Test and get a QOS of 98 percent.

Any help would be appreciated for this new user.

Thanks.

Dan

What to post when having technical trouble with Vonage....

1. Your location
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
3. Upload and download speeds
4. Modem make and
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2
6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc
8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston.

This will help you get the answers/resolution faster if you can post that first....

As requested:

1. Location: SF Bay Area
2. ISP Name and type: Comcast, Cable Modem
3. Upload and download speeds: Download: 4.20 mbps, Upload: 366 kbps
4. Modem make: Scientific Atlanta (Comcast standard issue here), DPC 2100
5. Vonage adapter: Linksys WRTP54G
6. Setup: Modem to Linksys. Phone and PC ports integrated into WRTP54G
7. Issue: Echo on receiving end. Cannot resolve using bandwidth meter settings. Have asked person I'm phoning to reduce their volume, but that has no effect as well.

See whether you can get anything from any of these threads
Search: WRTP54G echo

Also, make sure you have the latest firmware.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm trying to work through this problem with Vonage, but with no luck so far, so I thought I'd humbly beseech those here for any ideas you might have...

I'm in Atlanta, GA, using Comcast. My sound quality is excellent, but the people I'm speaking with always complain of an echo.

I have a Motorola cable modem, then the Linksys RT31P2 router; nothing in between. I've tried connecting only a wired phone with no improvement (I usually have my DirecTivo on a splitter; to the router I have my PC and an MS wireless router acting as an access point for a 2nd PC).

Using the test here a few times, I get:

Download 2,040,568 bps
Upload 358,216 bps
QOS 53%
RTT 54 ms
MaxPause 297 ms

Download 2,349,272 bps
Upload 288,096 bps
QOS 36%
RTT 57 ms
MaxPause 93 ms

Download 2,090,408 bps
Upload 309,000 bps
QOS 76%
RTT 55 ms
MaxPause 110 ms

Needless to say, it always says I can handle up to 4 connections.

I would guess that both of you have a problem with your Packet Discards (ref), although I'm not positive. If you look at the Packet Discards to you and from you you will notice from you has much higher discards.

If I am correct only your ISP can fix the problem, although making sure you have the latest firmware may help.

Bet I can give you an easy fix... Change phones!!

I had the same problem with a cheap wireless phone, so I tried my Vonage line with another wireless as well as a wired phone and guess what ----- NO MORE ECHO!!!

Sometimes cheap phones use shared circuitry to process phone calls which can cause echos (read it on a Yahoo search), so I switched phones and voila.

You have more bandwidth than I get with Charter in north Atlanta (3/256) and my inbound and outbound voice is superior.

Let us know how this works if you haven't tried it already... Smile

Hmm, I hardly think that the Panasonic KX-TG5566 phone is a cheap phone. In any case, I've also tried various Uniden and Vtech phones, with no improvement. That's the advantage of buying from Fry's, they seem to take stuff back with no questions, at least so far...

Let me contact Comcast and inquire about the packet discards. That seems like a good place to start, especially since it seems both of us are having the same issues with the same ISP.

I'm not sure I see how packet discards would cause an echo...garbled audio or dropouts, sure, but echo? Could you explain your thinking there? Besides, my packet loss rates are very low. My MaxPause numbers seem high compared to what everyone else posts...

Also, I do have the latest firmware, and I have tried multiple phones.

Any other suggestions?

It was just a guess after looking at a different thread, but after looking at that thread again, I saw that I was connecting the wrong questions/answers, and the packet discards was referring to choppy audio as you said.
