Hi Friends,
Currently I am not a Vonage customer and want to take a switch to Vonage .... I am wondering if I should do so ? Reading at different issues and problems, it seems like Vonage is at par with other leading Voip phone provider .... which has HELL lot of troubles. I am with the other Company for last 1 year ( due to $39.99 termination fee .... I think its the same with Vonage ) and had hundreds of intermittant problems like ....
1) Your call gets disconnected after 5 -6 minutes.....
2) When you dial a number , the receiver gets a WRONG caller ID for your Voip number.....
3) You get calls, but NO CALLER ID .....
4) You can make outgoing calls, but can not receive calls .....
5) The Voip light on the adapter is ON, but there is no DIAL TONE...
6) You wake up in the morning and find that DIAL TONE is dead. The Voip light is gone....
7) When you make a call, the other party will hear you, but you keep on saying HELLO, because you dont hear them....

I had to call the Customer and his standard answer would be PERFORM A sequential RESET on MODEM and Voip adapter. I am fed up with this service. I wonder if Vonage is better ..... Can anybody guide me ...... Thanks ...

ALSO : I noticed that Vonage says No annual contract, But charges you a Termination Fee of $39.99, no matter where you purchased your adapter ( retail or from Vonage itself ). Can anybody say this is NOT true ?

I don't believe there is any persay termination fee. I believe if you received the phone adapter for no charge you are charged a fee until the adapter is returned.

Hi taylor2767
Thanks. But here is a clip from the "Terms Of Service" from the Vonage website, extracted just now ....

3.6 Termination Fee (Does Not Apply to Business Plus Customers). You will be charged a termination fee of $39.99 per voice line if your Service is terminated for any reason during the first twelve months following the activation of your Service.

Here it does not talk about Retail or Website customer. This rule applies to all customers..... Otherwise they would have made it clear in the above SECTION itself .... What do you say now ?

Thanks

Hi,
To make things more clear .... I have this info from the "TOS" on the Vonage website .....

Quote:
2.10 Return of Device (Does Not Apply to Business Plus Customers)
(a) Retail Customers. A Retail Customer may only return the Device to the retail store, dealer or other provider from which the Retail Customer purchased the Device. All returns will be subject to the return policy of such retail store, dealer or other provider. We will not accept any Device returned to us from a Retail Customer.
(b) Non-Retail Customers. Non-Retail Customers may return the Device to us within fourteen (14) days of the termination of Service to receive a credit for the $39.99 termination fee (See Section 3.6) provided that:
the Service is terminated within the first thirty (30) days following the activation of the Service;
the Device is in original condition, reasonable wear and tear excluded;
the original proof of purchase are returned with the Device, together with the original packaging, all parts, accessories, and documentation;
prior to returning the Device to us, you obtain a valid return authorization number from our customer care department, which can be reached at billing@vonage.com or 1-VONAGE-HELP; and
you pay all costs of shipping the Device back to us.

Which means the $39.99 is returned to Vonage website customer only when he cancels within 30 days. Otherwise he too will loose the $39.99 , which is the Termination Fee......

I've only had Vonage for a week, while friends of mine have had it for over a year, no real problems to complain about. I know last year during the hurricanes, my friends were only able to do long distance calls via Vonage b/c the landline system was too damaged / overloaded. Be aware that some of the problems you describe could possibly be attributed to your configuration/connection rather than your VoIP's service (incoming calls, dropped calls,etc), but it doesn't explain the others.

A recent survey rated Vonage the most reliable:

For the full thing, see this URL:
http://www.keynote.com/news_events/releases_2005/05july12.html

Summary:

First of Its Kind Ranking of Voice over IP (VoIP) Quality Reveals Need for Considerable Improvement in Service

* Vonage Ranks First in Overall Reliability Among Voip Providers; Time Warner Cable Far Ahead as Most Reliable Network Carrier
* AT&T CallVantage Provides Best Audio Clarity; Time Warner Cable Ties with UUNET for Top Spot for Audio Clarity Among Networks
* AT&T CallVantage, Packet 8, Primus Lingo, Skype, Verizon and Vonage Included in Study; Calls carried over AT&T, Sprint and UUNET Business-Class Networks, as well as Residential DSL and Residential Cable Networks.

I have been surprised at how easy it is to use Vonage's web site to control 8 business lines since April 2005.

However, I have been less than pleased with transfer of existing numbers, stability of call hunt features, knowledge of phone tech support personnel, and billing/cancellation/rebates.

However, we are saving $1,800/month using Vonage so I can't complain too much. Most days there are a few glitches via Cox Cable Modem T1 Equivalent (1.5MB both ways). None have really been persisted more than a few minutes.

Vonage was never successful transferring existing phone numbers, and I cancelled a couple of lines . . . got a $41 cancel charge/line, a $41 credit, and this month I am still getting billed for the cancelled lines.

Likely due to the 911 sticker mailing, the Vonage 866 help number isn't being answered today . . . but these are all minor problems. The quality is 95%+ acceptable . . . and I am saving a bunch.

I can vouch for Vonage. $54/month for 2 lines can't be beat. The reliability is great, calls are clear, and extra money in the pocket never hurts..
The majority of the time when people complain about sound quality is almost always an ISP issue.
