When I call from my laptop with the SoftPhone....my number shows up, but the name says Vonage User.

Does anyone know how to change this?

Thanks!

No.

The way caller ID name works is that the phone company who provides service (e.g. Vonage) puts your name in a database. When your call is placed only the number is actually sent with the call. It is the responsibility of the phone company of the person receiving the call to look up the name of the caller using the number.

Unfortunately, probably because they use a number of different third parties to manage the actual POTS interface, Vonage does not supply true names into this database.

Therefore there is no way at this time to have your name displayed with calls. Some people who have ported their numbers to Vonage will enjoy the benefit of having their name in the database for some period of time.

the 'vonage user' can be removed, but it will either display the number and 'unknown' or a '.'. no name.

Actually, you CAN change it. Looking at the X-Pro-vonage executable (x-pro-vonage.exe) with a text editor, you will see at line number 2556 an entry for Display name with a value of "Vonage User". I have edited this entry and then saved it. This updates the caller id info.

I recommend EditPlus which you can down load for the edit.

I use SoftPhone with a SPA-3000. This device allows me to change the caller ID to what I want.

I like the exe hack though boingpilot. I will do it with my laptop for sure...

I tried this and X-Pro would no longer run. It said it was not a valid win32 application. All I did was save the file after making that one change.

In the "save as" dialog there is a setting for encoding. By default it is ANSI. There is also Unicode and UTF-8. Should one of those be used instead ?

Not sure... I believe there is a length limit, if you make it too long it breaks the .exe.

I've done it on several of my laptops, works ok.. PM if you have more questions
