Can't get RT31P2 to work with DI-624 Wireless home network?

My apologies in advance for "another" post regarding an existing home network set-up issue. No matter what suggestion, screen shot or tip I've found on the forum so far, I just can't seem to nail down the right configuration. It's been an all-day affair and I've thrown in the towel. Maybe there's someone else out there who can help?

I have the following for my existing home network:

1) Adelphia for service provider
2) Motorola cable modem
3) D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless Router (4-port)
4) Have all 4 ports on the wireless in use on the home network
5) Use the wireless access for other laptops in the home
6) RT31P2 Router From Vonage

Problem: I have been trying to set-up the RT31P2 router between the cable modem and the existing wireless router as has been suggested on many posts. Even though I tried many of the suggestions on the forum for DHCP, static routing, and cabling configurations....the end result has been the same: I can't get all 4 PC's to have access to the internet & the network at the same time.

I know I must be missing something either in the configuration of one or both routers or the way I'm cabling them together. I know there are posters who believe using more than one router for a home network is not a good idea, but I'd rather not lose my current hardware or the ability to have 4 PC's and wireless access like I have now.

Any detailed step by step configuration instructions or diagrams would be most appreciated. For what it's worth, I've already tried kendolin's suggestion at the following link & can't get that one to work either: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic6451.html

You may have already tried this, but this is how I would set it up:

Modem > (via wan) RT31P2 > (via wan) DI-624

RT31P2 Settings:
DMZ 192.168.15.2

DI-624 Settings:
Internet Connection Settings:
-Static IP 192.168.15.2
-Subnet 255.255.255.0
-Gateway 192.168.15.1

Arking:

Thanks for the offer to help with this. I believe I have tried this, but would like to double-check. Can you add a bit more information for me. Under your scenario:

1) What is the DHCP setting for the RT31P2?
2) What is the DHCP setting for the DI-624?
3) What is the Automatically obtain IP setting for the RT31P2?
4) What is the Automatically obtain IP setting for the DI-624?
5) Is the WAN to WAN cabling between the 2 routers all that is needed? No other cabling is required between the 2 at all?
6) Does all the hardware need to be powered off before I start cabling the modem>RT31P2>DI-624?
7) Last stupid question: Do I configure the RT31P2 first or the DI-624?

Thanks again!

1) What is the DHCP setting for the RT31P2?
-Your ISP's settings
-DHCP Server = ON
2) What is the DHCP setting for the DI-624?
-Static ISP(RT31P2's IP) IP
-DHCP Server = ON
3) What is the Automatically obtain IP setting for the RT31P2?
-Your ISP's settings
4) What is the Automatically obtain IP setting for the DI-624?
-Static IP
5) Is the WAN to WAN cabling between the 2 routers all that is needed? No other cabling is required between the 2 at all?
Modem to WAN port on RT31P2, Port 1 (or 1/3) on RT31P2 to WAN port on Belkin.
6) Does all the hardware need to be powered off before I start cabling the modem>RT31P2>DI-624?
It may be necessary. Try it without, if that doesn't work try power cycling them.
7) Last stupid question: Do I configure the RT31P2 first or the DI-624?
Doesn't matter. You have to have your computer plugged into each individual router to configure.

If anything is unclear, I'll try to explain.

Note: Any computer on the RT31P2 will not be able to access computer on the Belkin

When connecting the second router to the RT31P2 with its WAN port both routers can have DHCP Server enabled.

If you were to have connected them normal port to normal port, DHCP Server would have to be disabled on the second router. The way you have read about would be using the Belkin merely as a switch, which may be a little more complicated to set up.

Well, I guess I can chalk this up to being just plain stubborn (i.e. read the manual!). All it took to get this to work was following the install instructions provided by Vonage for the RT31P2 (on their web site).

Vonage states that all the hardware involved (cable modem, router, PC's) should be powered off "before" getting underway. I had never done that during my previous attempts. Once I had cabled together the modem > RT31P2 WAN > D-Link WAN with everything off, I powered up the hardware in the order suggested....and everything worked.

I have access to the internet on all 4 PC's, the home network exists exactly as it did before, the wireless 4-port D-Link router is fully used & functional, and the Vonage phone is all set. There were no configuration changes required on either the RT31P2 or D-Link DI-624.

Hopefully there are other folks out there that can learn from my lesson....and my stubborness Wink.

Thanks again.

First all this info is great thanks.

I have a RT31P2 and a wrv54g.

I have the RT31P2 setup fine.
then the lan from port 3 on the RT31P2 to port 4 on the WRV.

It all seems to work but I am having a VPN connection problem.

I tried the above but on the second router I get a wan subnet confilcts the lan subnet.

What am I missing?? arh

Thanks in advance.

I have the DI-614 but no big deal.

I gave up on having the Vonage box ahead of the D-Link... I couldn't get it to work. So I did a technically wrong setup:

The cablemodem plugs into the wan port on the D-Link.

The D-Link has two machines wired directly to it. A third cable goes into the basement into a 16-port switch.

The switch has my servers and some play machines Smile and another long cable wired back upstairs into the living room, plugged into the wan port of my Vonage box.

Sometimes I plug a laptop into the Ethernet ports on the Vonage box, but usually I just use WiFi.

It works amazingly well. One thing I love about it is that I can simply remove the Vonage box and take it anywhere without disrupting the network. If I need to use a wired connection in the living room I can just use the cable that normally supplies the feed to the Vonage box. Smile

I left the Vonage box set to autoconfig via DHCP. This facilitates use of the box in other network environments.

I can even use my server via NFS and SMB through wire through the Vonage router. I made no configuration changes to permit this.

Speed through the wire isn't great, but it works. Smile The Voip call quality seems fine. I'm sure there is additional latency but it isn't noticeable.
