Please tell me how to turn off all the ringers on both our phone lines.
(I couldn't find a truly appropriate category for this question.)
I want to use the IR receivers in our rooms to kill the ringers on all our phones. Maybe I need an electronic multiple-throw-multiple-pole switch or a solenoid-actuated switch. I already have a gadget that will turn the household AC off and on at the site where both phone lines enter our whole-house entertainment gear closet to be distributed to the rooms.
Is there a phone line switch that will disconnect both lines when you turn the AC off? Or is there a way to just stop both lines from ringing without disconnecting the lines? Doesn't the phone office send AC at higher voltage to ring your phone? I seem to remember a schematic showing how to introduce low-voltage DC into the circuitry to incapacitate the ringers.
I'm way out of my depth. Can you disrupt the detection of ringer equivalency or something like that? I don't need to understand the principle, though that would be nice. I just want to be able pick up a remote anywhere in the house and kill the ringers on all our phones with the press of a button. My wife and I would like to spend time together uninterrupted or sleep uninterrupted.
If no one here knows about this kind of stuff, maybe one of you can point me to people who do.
Thanks.

A quick search turns up a ring suppressor which will block ring voltage.

Combine this with a modular telephone A/B switch and you could disable ringing without disconnecting the lines. I was unable using a quick search to find a remote controlled modular A/B switch specifically for telephones, but any MPMT switch should work.
Also note that the site above lists a night time ring suppressor that has a photo sensor to disable ringing when the lights are off. You could possibly modify this to work for what you want to do. |

Bryan... I have GOT to see a picture of your collection of remotes!
I thought I was living on the wild side with my three remotes (TV, cable box, and ceiling fan/lights) bound together by one of my kid's elastic hairties. |

tix - i best that remote setup also serves as an Halloween accessory well. Plus, there's the "the channel changes when I say 'trick or treat'" feature... |
