Using Port Triggering Instead of Port Forwarding ?

I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router with a Linksys PAP2 ATA. It took me a while to get it working, and what I ended up doing was assigning static IP and gateway addresses to the ATA then forwarding ports 10000-20000 to it. I'm not sure why I didn't have to forward the other ports but it works anyway.

What I want to know is, can I use port triggering instead of forwarding? I really don't want to leave 10000 ports open all the time. If I can use triggering, how do I configure it?

some of the accounts vonage currently has in service are using ports in the 10k-20k range for SIP which is the protocol that is used when connecting your phone calls. these ports are normally used for RTP, but since there are so many SIP can be squeezed in too. The reason you may not want to use port triggering is that the Vonage device registers with Vonage's proxy servers every 20 seconds so that it can keep the NAT in your router open for its relay servers, so in effect it would not really make a difference.
