If e911 is activated on one's line, the message you get when dialing 933 should simply be: "enhanced 911 is now activated" or something simple and clear like that. |

When I got the mailing about 933, I tried it and the message was that 911 was activated on my line. (NOT e911.) Curiosity got the best of me and I finally decided to see just where the call would go, so I called 911. I told the dispatcher this was not an emergency, that I had a Vonage line, and I was curious where my call ended up. He knew of Voip and the issues involved, and was very helpful and understanding. My call had ended up at the local emergency dispatch number, though not via a 911 line. The only information he had was that I was calling from (701-xxx-xxxx) whereas the "x's were my correct home phone (Vonage) number. I was glad to hear that they at least had that much, and that if I were able to tell them my address they could dispatch the nessesary emergency team. If I could not talk, it is likely they would hang up as the call came in on a non-emergency line. |

You should check your local laws and policies before testing 911. I once (foolishly) had 911 programmed on a phone with an automatic dialer. (Not a Vonage line.) My wife accidentally hit the 911 button instead of the button for the number she intended to call. She told the 911 operator that the call was a mistake and to ignore it. Five or so minutes later, a policeman was at our front door. My wife told him, "You shouldn't have come. I told them it was a mistake." He repied, "We never accept that a 911 call is a mistake. Someone could be holding a gun to your head and forcing you to say that." |

we had that happen at work last fall, about 5 times in 2 days.. we got a new phone system in teh entire building and someow 911 was being dialed by mistake w/o anyone even knowing it, the 911 operator herd weird noises and then the call would d/c so they dispatched.. luckily we deal with teh same cops that kept comming and they didnt' get too pissed.. |
