PostPosted: Fri Jul 29, 2005 9:34 pm    Post subject: Why is my 2nd phone working with Vonage? Reply with quote Back to top

Ok, this is a strange one. I have a 2- line cordless phone (call it phone A) where line 1 is connected to Verizon standard service, and line 2 is connected to the Voip adapter with Vonage and it works fine. I have another 2- line cordless phone (call it phone B) where only line 1 is connected to Verizon. The other day, I happend to try line 2 on phone B and got dial tone, even though it is not hooked up to anything! How is this possible? At first I thought I must be getting a 2nd Verizon line by mistake (Verizon has been working in the neighborhood), but I tested it by making a call from line 2 on phone B to line 1, and the caller id shows up as my Vonage phone number. Neither of the phones are multiple handsets and they are different brands. I tried plugging phone B into other phone jacks in the house, and only line 1 worked so it's only on one particular jack that this works. Guess I shouldn't complain, but I just can't figure out how this could be happening. Am I going crazy?

I don't have enough information here, but I am going to make some guesses. Phone 1 is connected to the wall with one line cord into port 1 and to the Vonage adapter with a second line cord into port 2. Phone 2 is connected to the wall with a single line cord in port 1.

It is likely that your two line phones are able to take both line 1 and line 2 from the wall jack connected to port 1 and so your first 2 line phone is bridging your Vonage line into your house wiring.

This could be risky for your adapter if you have not disconnected line 2 from the telco at your NID. The easy fix is to switch out the four conductor line cord used to connect port 1 of phone 1 to line 1 at the wall with a two conductor cord. This will prevent the phone from bridging the connection into the house wiring.

If you want Vonage on line 2 of both phones then follow the standard house wiring instructions and disconnect line 2 only from the telco at the NID.

I know the above was a bit unclear. Reply if my guesses were incorrect or if you need additional information.

Your guesses are on the mark. I do have a 4 conductor line cord connected to port 1 of phone 1 so it must be bridging as you say. I have 2 more questions:

1. Why is this risky for my adapter?

2. What do you mean by "follow the standard house wiring instructions"?

Thanks very much for your help!

if your 2nd line in your house wiring is still connectd to Verizon, there may still be voltage present on those wires, that voltage back-feeding into the ATA can screw it up, esp if a unexplained call comes throughon that line..

there is instructons on the Vonage web site and as well prolly 2 thousand times over on this forum about how to conect/disconect your landlines and your conage to your entire house..

you need to d/c your landline wiring either outside or in yoru basement, just on your line 2 (prolly yellow and black wires) this will isolate it to stay within your house and you'll be good to go with having Vonage and Verizon together on your phones Smile

For detailed instructions see the Michigan Telephone Site for instructions on disconnecting your house from the telephone company. You will only need to make sure that line 2 is disconnected since you are using the phone company for line 1.
