Re: disable qos
... Re: loss of connectivity...
Since making the "QOS" change, to the Linksys RT31P2 the problem of losing the connectivity nearly every few min's, seems so far to have made the difference!
Should the situation change; then, I'll give notice here. So far, so good!
Cheers and thanks again,

OK, now that we're getting somewhere, WHY does disabling QOS make a difference - anyone have any ideas?

Post subject: I am going to try this
I have exactly the same problem and am going to try to disable QOS. Now if I can just figure out how to log on to my
Vonage
router for the 1st time.

Re: Accessing Linksys Voice/Ethernet Router
Not sure about other models; however, using the RT31P2 Linksys Voice/Ethernet Router use IP Address: 192.168.15.1
I hope this helps.

I'm the original poster, and I've not had any problems since putting this fix in. No lockups and voice quality is the same.

Post subject: I have disabled QOS
I am still experiencing quality just over that of a bad cell phone. I am so pissed.
But, I have not at least dropped a call since I turned off the QOS.
I am trying to figure a way to get both of my 2 adapters (RTP300s) after the modem and BEFORE my router so as to get some better quality and less conflicts with my downloads.
My understanding is that if I put them after the router and plug the PC's into the adapters than I loose my home network and file sharing, etc.
I'm running 4 tivos, 1 playstation, and 6 computers off my network and I think I'm just pulling too much bandwidth with the 2
Voip
set ups.
Any thoughts?

I'm not completely sure I understand your network setup but I'm wondering why you need 2 switches? Also, does the RTP300 have routing capabilities? Why 2 RTP300's - can they only support 1 line?
Why not SB5100 -> BEFSRW4 -> Netgear switch -> then the RTP300's and the other devices?
So many questions, so few answers ..

Having 2 RTP300's makes that tricky. To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't use an RTP300 as the main router in an environment used for anything other than basic web browsing and email (especially with the current firmware quality issues).
I suppose you could try a configuration with 3 cascading routers, but (RTP300 reliability problems aside) that still might compromise voice quality of the second RTP300 in the chain:
Code:
SB5100 -> RTP300 #1 -> RTP300 #2 -> Main router -> LAN
If you are open to an additional hardware expenditure, what about replacing your existing router with one with solid QoS functionality (I'm partial to the Linksys WRT54GS with Sveasoft 3rd party firmware) ?
Code:
|
|-> LAN
|
SB5100 -> WRT54GS |-> RTP300 #1
|
|-> RTP300 #2
|
Then you can prioritize traffic to the RTP300's to have the highest priority via the WRT54GS QoS functionality. As long as your ISP provides reliable 200+ kbps upstream bandwidth, you will probably be in good shape...

Post subject: Good ideas! Question about 3d Party Firmware
Thank you for these two posts.
Let me answer Jim's question first if I can. My 16 port switch is hardwired of course to my home office, but I have so many ethernet devices in my office that i need a second 8 port swtich there to connect to the ethernet connection. Thus the configuration below (see diagram).
I have two adapaters because I have 2 separate accounts with
Vonage
. One has my home number and one has my office number AND fax.
Polaris: I am wide open to additional hardware expenditures - would do it in a heartbeat. Your diagram is easy to understand and makes perfect sense to me, alhtough I have a very newbie question....
My modem is in the basement and of course any distribution of ethernet signal is via the Lan (at least currently). If I run the RTP300#1 and #2 off the Router they will be sitting in the basement and I am concerned that there won't be enough cordless signal available to get phone coverage across the house.
I am fortunate to have a phone bridget that is connected to my outside phone box with one single cat 5 cable that I have disconnected. It makes me think that I can use simply plug a phone line from the adapter to the phone jacks in the basement and hardwire the two lines across the house. I certainly hope I'm right that there is no other connection to the outside phone line power source (at least I can't find any)!!
Last newbie questions: I am assuming that the Sveasoft 3rd party firmware is a download?
I am running consistently 350+ kbps upstream bandwidth so I am encouraged by your suggested configuration and will try it today.
Thanks man!

Assuming that you have a 100 Mbit-capable switch (who doesn't these days?
), I believe that the following configuration would work as long as the
Voip
traffic is prioritized by the WRT54GS:
Code:
|
|-> LAN
|
SB5100 -> WRT54GS -> 100 Mbit switch -> |-> RTP300 #1
|
|-> RTP300 #2
|

That's easy enough to test. If you unplug the cat 5 cable and your working land line goes dead, then you're in good shape. The
Vonage Home Wiring and Installation Guide
has a great (and simple) recommendation to make sure that the phone company doesn't mess things up for you:

Yep. The Sveasoft freeware Alchemy version can be downloaded at
wrt54g.com
. Please note that it is important to read the hardware version warnings there before flashing Alchemy. The latest Sveasoft firmware is Talisman, and can only be obtained with a $20 Sveasoft subscription from
Sveasoft.com
.

You should be in good shape with a solid modem like the Moto SB5100.
