PostPosted: Fri Jul 29, 2005 2:49 pm    Post subject: Callers are hearing an intermittent digital hiss... Reply with quote Back to top

I've read the threads on DTMF sounds, etc. but those aren't my symptoms..

3 MG DL, 750 UL, Charter, Ma.
Linksys PAP2, Linksys BEFSR11 router, and a hub.

It's most prevalent when I call into my office, terminating on a T1, and a meridian pbx.. what my co-workers complain of is that every 6-10 seconds there's a digital hiss or click for 1/4 second - no tone, but similar to a dead space on a radio dial. They also tell me that if I'm talking during that exact 1/4 second, it cuts me out briefly.
Calls terminated to pots lines (or other PBX's) experience the same, but to a significantly lesser degree.
I've read other threads where getting tech support to program port 2 on the ATA alleviates the problem.
Any ideas, guys and gals?
Thanks
Alan

Sounds like you could be having bursts of packet loss in the outgoing direction. Run the www.testyourvoip.com call to Boston, and paste the detailed results here.

Paul: here are the results... doesn't look like packet loss, eh?

Yep, no obvious problems there. It could be Vonage's fault.

Meaning, I don't know what's causing the problem. If it's not your connection, then it's either something with the router, or something on Vonage's end.

Or something to do with his phone or wiring.

What type of phone are you using?
Have you tried a corded phone connected directly to the router?

Will your IT department at work allow you to take your router there and try to make calls? (just to completely eliminate something in your home network/Internet connection/home environment)

I've got two Nortel 9417's and 2 single-lines in the house , and the pap2 is running thru an rj11 in my office, lighting up the house. (total of 4 phone). I checked the polarity on all the jacks; it's good - telco is unplugged from the LIU...
I'll haven't tried to PAP with only a single-line. I will. And I'll take the ATA to the office and test is there as well.

I took the PAP2 out of the house wiring, and called work with just a SL plugged into the ATA... Same problem -
I then called the fax line next to the person at work, he picked it up, and the call was clear as a bell, no interrupts. Then his cell, same positive results.
Is there some inherent problem with attenuation terminating Vonage calls onto a BRI T1? Could the T setting be too hot?

Although I hope that someone here can give you a solution, I fear you have strayed way outside this forum's expertise.

I would suggest that if you can lay your hands on a different adapter you give that a try. I am unsure what the return policies (restocking fees, etc) are, but perhaps you could buy one for testing and return it shortly thereafter to determine if it is a Vonage problem or a PAP2 problem.

If you want me to call you at the office from my Vonage line, send me a PM and we can arrange a time. I have an older Motorola adapter. Maybe you could arrange a call from someone here with a PAP2 and a Linksys router/adapter as well to collect more data points.
