PostPosted: Fri Jul 29, 2005 12:41 pm    Post subject: Existing wireless network with RT31P2 Reply with quote Back to top

I hooked up my Vonage Linksys RT31P2 router to my existing Linksys wireless router, just plugged it in and it's working fine. Is there any reason for me to get into the Linksys/Vonage router's settings? I never had to do any set up because the wireless router had all of my internet settings. Is there any benifit to it or any settings I should be adjusting?

Thanks,

Eric

For Vonage that should be okay. I would suggest enabling WEP for the wireless function though (you said you haven't changed anything).

It may be better to have the RT31P2 before the other router because the RT31P2 has qos which will keep your call quality okay when you are using the internet.

Sorry, didn't change anything on the RT31P2. WEP and MAC filtering security are enabled on the esixting Linksys wireless router. I've got 3Mbps up and down internet so I don't notice any drop in quality while I'm online. I guess everything's ok the way it is then, right?

Thanks for the info,

Eric

I did pretty much the same thing. Network lines comes from wall, to existing Linsys wireless router, to new Vonage (non-wireless) router. Phone line goes from Vonage router to wall outlet. Works fine. The only modification (other than WEP & MAC filtering) I made to the wireless router was to enable QoS and set the priority of the port the Vonage box was plugged into to "high." I made no changes to the Vonage network settings. No problems and calls are clear. Very Happy

Thank You,

Does QoS only allocate bandwith to the preferred/selected "port" or is there more?

Thanks,

Eric

Does someone have a step by step tutorial on how to successfully connect 2 routers.

I have the RT31P2 Vonage router and a wireless linksys router.

I want to go from the modem to the Vonage router to the wireless. I have tried several different configurations and none have worked.

Please help.

1) Application-based QoS (Internet Port)
2) Port-based Qos (Hardware Port)
3) Voice QoS (Vonage)

Look for yourself - Application & Gaming > QoS

To use the wireless internet you should just be able to run an ethernet cable from a port (1-3) on your RT31P2 to the WAN port on the wireless router. Make sure your wireless router is set to obtain an IP automatically.

To be able to access network devices connect to the RT31P2 over the WiFi connection you need to turn DHCP server off on the wireless router. Assign it a static IP in the RT31P2's range (eg 192.168.15.2), then set a static route on the RT31P2 (Setup > Advanced Routing) then use this screen shot as a reference:

Then save the settings. Connect the wireless router (now an AP) to the RT31P2 from a port on the RT31P2 (1-3) to on of the standard ports on the wireless(1-4).
