Symes, I forgot all about this but have you opened the appropriate ports for your rt31p2? It's in the help section. Sometimes when the rt31p2 is placed behind another router, you will need to have port forwarding with certain ports that the rt31p2 needs to use. See the help section link below:

http://www.vonage.com/help.php?article=89&category=

I can't believe I didn't think about this before. I hope this helps, mundy5

Mundy5, have been quite rigorous in observing the recommended sequences for powering up and down so don't think that is the problem.

As for the Belkin - it is my own rather than provided by ISP - but I have recently bought a linksys wireless gateway and tried it with that and the problem remains in exactly the same form. The wireless aspect should be completely irrelevant (but have disabled that as a last resort anyway). The only remaining option is to try to get a DSL modem only but that is impossible to buy in a store in the UK - they are being phased out as they push everyone towards networking - the only available models are USB which won't work with the rt31p2 - or one model available on the net. Of course, with buying 2 new pieces of kit this is becoming a very expensive exercise and kind of defeats the purpose of getting Vonage in the first place!!

Yes - have opened all the appropriate ports on both the Belkin and the new linksys gateway - no difference.

Symes, thank you for your willingness to work with me. Now that most of the options have been eliminated, there is only one I can think of. It is to place the rt31p2 in DMZ mode. That's about all I can think of that can be done. I assume that you had given it a try. But I just throw it out there as a possibility.

Aside from the DMZ idea, I have run out. Yours is a very difficult case. I ask the other more knowledgeable members in the forum to chime in.

Unfortunately i have already tried that too!! On both modems! The simpler piece of kit may be the only option left to explore before sending the rt31p2 back as faulty....unless anyone has further suggestion!

Symes,

I just re-read your first post and you mentioned that you tried DMZ. My apologies for not remembering.

Regarding your concern that the rt31p2 might be faulty, I would suggest that you find a neighbor or a friend who has a modem only setup and try it there first before declaring it faulty. This could be quite difficult if, as you say, most people appear to own combination equipment...

I know that they push Vonage a lot in the UK and it just doesn't make sense if the unit is incompatible with many of these modem/router combination units.

As mentioned in an earlier post I don't think that you are going to have much success with your current modem/router combo. I would return your wireless gateway, chuck you combo box or sell it to an unsuspecting person on ebay, and purchase a nice modem and connect that directly to you Linksys Voip router. You should be able to purchase just a modem for less then $100.
