PostPosted: Tue Jul 26, 2005 1:51 pm    Post subject: Special Broadband Cable Connection Reply with quote Back to top

I subscribed to broadband cable back in 2001. At that time all installations were performed by the local cable company and they used Road Runner. They shortly after switched to InstaNet. At installation time the cable ran a separate cable from the room my computer was in to the drop box outside, supplied the modem and tested the installation. At the outside box there appears to be a balun coil between the computer and the feed line /TV connection. I have no idea what it is but everything works nifty.

I am considering moving my computer to another room with the modem, router and Vonage TA. I'm wondering if I must move the computer cable feed to the new room or if I can just plug the modem into the TV outlet? I notice that the cable company no longer provides installations. They just issue a modem when you sign on and tell you to plug into a cable outlet! I saw this when my neighbor subscribed to Instanet a couple of weeks ago.

Does anyone know the purpose of my "special feed"? Perhaps it has something to do with the modem they provided? I called and asked the cable company and the tech did not know anything about my installation and was not particulary inclined to find out. His reccommendations all started out with, "I guess you could..."

Thanks,

If it is not just a splitter then the tech may have noticed noise on your lines.
With noise there is poor performance so he would have replaced/installed a new line to determine if the old line was allowing ingress (electrical and or RF noise entering the system). If it didn't solve the problem then he installed a high pass filter to block the offending signals to enter either the modem or the system.
Being a tech myself, I would tell you that if it works, don't fix it.

That's what I'm thinking. At that time though all broadband installations were done that way. The company did replace all the copper with fibre optic cable on the poles around 2003. I hate that crawlway under my house. My 68 year old arthritic bones are not compatible with hands & knee evolutions! I believe when I change rooms though I'll just bite the bullet and move the cable.

Thanks Mate,

Do they provide cable tv service also and if so, do your subscribe. If you do not subscribe then the coil you mention is to block video.

.

Yes they do provide TV and I am a subscriber. The one feed splits off to all the rooms for TV, the feed they added goes only to my computer modem. As I mentioned, all broadband connections installed when I subscribed were done that way.

I might drop down to their office and pay them a personal visit. They seem to respond much better to eyeball contact then phone/e-mail. They "done-it", surely someone there remembers why.

A friend of my brother's had Cable Internet, and he decided to move his modem, but did not move the dedicated modem cable line, when he tried tp lug in a TV to the modem line it would not work, however the modem would work in the rest of the house..

like said above, I think it may be to block the Video feed for TV's..

now I dont' know if they ever opened the outside box to look for any blockers on the line, but I know a TV would not work on teh modem line..
