PostPosted: Tue Jul 26, 2005 11:55 am    Post subject: Incoming ring still US style not UK Reply with quote Back to top

It's not a major problem as such but why can't they fix the incoming ring to a standard uk brr-brr----brr-brr? I've just spent 58 minutes onto tech support who moved my line to phone port 2 (don't know why) saying this would fix the problem....it didn't. After countless reboots it still rang USstyle, then they took too much power off of it so the phone only went "tinkle" (I have an old push button bell phone and a cordless connected) They raised the power level back but still USstyle ring. After 50 minutes the advisor said "We're sorry Vonage only supply the US style ring with the linksys router" Surely it is only a matter of writing/changing something in their database-software that will make the phones ring in the style of the country they're issuing adapters too.
I had to ring my BT line from the mobile so that the advisor could hear what a UK phone rings like as he wasn't sure what type of ringing tone I was hoping to get.

And finally another moan is when will they get this: "International" "not available" "unknown" "0441xxx xxxxxx"caller display problem fixed, it's a real pain....

PostPosted: Fri Jul 29, 2005 11:39 am    Post subject: DO YOU WANT A UK RING ON INCOMING CALLS?? Reply with quote Back to top

WHEN YOU RECEIVE CALLS ON YOUR Vonage LINE DOES IT RING THE BRITISH STANDARD : ring-ring........ring-ring.......ring-ring......ring-ring
OR IS IT THE U.S. STYLE riiiiiinnnnnggg.......................riiiiiiiiiinnnnng................riiiIIIIIiinnnnng?

IF YOU WANT IT TO RING LIKE A UK PHONE ON INCOMING CALLS PLEASE LET CUSTOMER SERVICES KNOW ON 0800-652-5099 OPTION 3 THEN 2

THEY SEEM TO THINK THAT I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO'S REQUESTED THIS,AND INSIST THAT THE LINKSYS ROUTERS ARE PROGRAMMED FOR UK TONES,THAT MAY BE SO,BUT NOT FOR INCOMING CALLS THERE MUST BE SOMETHING IN THE ROUTER THAT SENDS OUT THE INCOMING RINGTONE AS AMERICAN AND NOT BRITISH.

IT IS NOT MY PHONES BECAUSE WHEN THEY ARE PLUGGED INTO TO THE BT LINE AND A CALL COMES IN THEY GO: ring-ring.....ring-ring ETC AS THEY SHOULD. AS SOON AS THEY ARE BACK IN THE LINKSYS ROUTER AND AN INCOMING CALL COMES IN ON THE Vonage NUMBER IT'S BACK TO THE U.S. STYLE rrrrrriiiiiinnnng................................rrrrrriiiiiinnnng

I'M NOT SAYING THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE US TONE BUT IT WOULD BE BETTER TO HAVE A UK RING FOR Vonage UK CUSTOMERS.

ANYONE MANAGED TO GET A UK RING ON THEIR LINKSYS ROUTER FROM CUSTOMER SERVICES/TECH SUPPORT? I'VE NOT HAD ANY LUCK YET. IF OTHERS REQUEST IT ITOO T MIGHT HURRY THEM UP TO SORT IT OUT.

THEY'RE SENDING ME A REPLACEMENT ROUTER,BUT I HAVE A FEELING THAT THIS WILL BE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ONE I'VE GOT NOW...........

Thanks for the all the calls and emails on this subject. Those of you have contacted us will be happy to know that we are working on this change.

The ringing change should be effective in the near future and I am sure you will notice when it happens Smile

So, please bear with us for a little while longer.

cheers

My Vonage Linksys RT31P2 box acts just like a real BT line, and I have a Vonage USA account. Here's what you need to do...

Call up the tech support people... tell them you want to change the "ring cadence". Tell them it's a function on your router. You'll have to be pushy about it because their techs aren't well-trained on this equipment, nor have they been given any information on it. Tell them to copy the settings from the following webpage:

http://www.packetradio.co.uk/sipura/advanced.htm
(and have them click on Regional). If they copy those settings, your call progress tones (dial tone, timed out, etc) and ring tones will be to BT spec and sound just like the real thing.

I had to get past the first level techs (the ones who only know how to tell you to unplug & plug your router back in) before I found someone who could access my router. Even then, the tech was VERY friendly, but they obviously don't tell these guys anything about how this equipment works. He was facinated by this page. FWIW, the Sipura Regional screen looks about 99% identical to the ones that the Vonage techs see...so the tech was able to just cut & paste them 1:1.

So, now here in the USA, my Vonage USA linksys box has a proper double-ring tone, as it should be. Smile and now I know if it's my Verizon land line or Vonage box. It does confuse my friends a bit though, as they're not used to the UK tones. Personally, I think BT's UK specs are much better than the US specs, especially when it comes to dial tones. In the US, we only get one dial tone, regardless of if you're transferring a call or trying to do a 3-way call. With the BT tones, you get a different pitch dialtone for each of these, making it very clear as to what function you're initiating.

As far as how long it takes for the changes, it took a whole 12 minutes from the time I dialled to the time I heard my Vonage line make that classic double ring.

The info you provided seems to have done the trick. Phone now ringing the uk way. Excellent.

Left it with Tech Support who called me back within 20mins and said they made some changes, they rang back on the Vonage line and it rang uk style. They advised to play around with it to see that everything works ok and let them know if any probs.

Just need to get the caller display fixed now so that there's no more of the "private" "call" "international" "not avail" and "0441xxx xxxxxx" being displayed, and the correct format 01xxx xxxxxx showing instead.

Did it change all of the call progress tones for you as well? the ring-out, timed out, etc, tones should all be the UK version if they copied the settings correctly.

I think it did change most of the tones, I've noticed a different pitch on some of the dial tones. ie when you dial *67 it changes to a high pitch, when recall is pressed the tone is different and some others are too,so I think they must've been all set to the sipura regional settings.

There was one difference, before the changes I had a phone connected that had the old style bells in, since the tone changes, there doesn't seem to have been enough power to make the bells ring properly,so have plugged in a different phone with a modern electronic ringer and it seems ok.

When a voicemail has been left the dial tone is broken off/on like the BT version too.

Interestingly enough, I've just tried what you've said above and spoken to two techs. They were both happy to change the ring to a UK one, but they refused to change anything else stating "We've been told not to make any futher changes right now". Shame really, as I'd have thought it wouldn't be too hard to swap the rest over, but I can see their point. I've worked on an IT support desk, and what the bosses say goes.

Just spoke to Vonage Tech support requesting "uk style" phone settings and they recognised my request, but would not change anything as they will be amending all UK Vonage routers in due course, once they have finished their testing of all the settings.
He gave an outlook of a couple of weeks (sounds optimistic to me!) but nonetheless a positive outlook.

Very friendly and approachable tech support guy - Maurice I think his name is.
