do you lose your 411 listing with phone co after transfering your number?

you are correct in your assumption. You will lose your 411 listing unless you specifically pay for a foreign listing with your local telco. The cost varies but I hear the $2/month the most. Just give your telco a call and ask them to speak with a supervisor so that you can request a foreign listing. I know many who run businesses do this because it would be suicide to lose the 411 listing.

a "foreign" listing here implies not a phone number from abroad but a phone number that is registered with a company other than the local telco.
