Ok , here is what I want to do.
I want to sign up for
Vonage
and hang onto my old number to see if I am happy with
Vonage
. If I am happy can I then have
Vonage
port my existing land line number over to
Vonage
?
This is exactly what I did, and I was charged 10.29 (including tax) to port my old number to
Vonage
, plus it took Qwest 6 weeks to allow the transfer so I had extra charges there.
Be sure to follow the advice of others who replied here to avoid any charges!

When you first sign up an initiate a number transfer you are not charged. If at a later date you wish to do a number transfer there is a $9.95 charge plus tax which comes out to be $10.29.
Thanks for letting me know I wasn't going crazy
