As far as why anyone would want to be able to use their household wiring, some of us still have PBXs installed and use them for all sorts of things. Even the best cordless phones don't even come close to the features of a real PBX, especially when it comes to intercom functions. Door intercoms, on-hook voice announcements (don't have to pick up the phone to answer a page), whole-house paging, etc.
