Hi, I am a new Vonage user.
Got the ATA yesterday, set everything up and it worked fine out of the box. Except, and this is a big except, if I do ANY surfing at all while using the phone. That's right, even downloading a small amount of data (which I can throttle down to almost nothing w/netlimiter), causes the incoming voice to get choppy. Folks I am talking to do not hear the same chop so this sounds like more of a download issue than upload.
Went through these forums and read all about netlimiter, pingplotter, port forwarding and triggering.
Data: Everything works fine with or without port forwarding or triggering on the router - though both are set to on right now on the appropriate ports.
Speedtest reports approximately 500K download/200K upload speed (Qwest w/MSN is ADSL provider)
Network topology is DSL Modem -> Router -> ATA -> computer.
Router is an older Linksys BEFSRU31 w/upgraded firmware from July - no MTU set (default = 1500)
PingPlotter reports terrible results and I can't even reach 63.246.4.243; I'm 10 hops into it and it shows an average of about 350ms by the 10th hop which leaves me somewhere in Qwest's network with packet size of 1400. With packet size of 56, it dies in Qwest's network after 80 ms.
PingPlotter to Yahoo is about 70 ms w/56byte packets and about 300ms w/1400 byte packets.
I'm struggling interpreting this data. First, why does it work at all if I can't even get an end to end response to sip.vonage.net or 63.256.4.243.
More importantly, why is there chop while surfing - even grabbing small amounts of data. It would look like there is some type of latency or maybe even a reachability issue but I'm not sure how to proceed from here. Is there any way in which UDP traffic is getting "crowded out" if I have any TCP/IP traffic as well.
Any ideas would be appreciated? thanks. arn |

Have you made any changes to the bandwidth saver settings? |

Thanks for your reply. I had tried that and it didn't have any effect. Given the ADSL, it seemed that this would help the upload proportionately more. But, in any event, didn't make a difference - still chop city. |
