I replaced my trusty WRT54G with this WRTP54G router which is running hot and is not supported by any third-party firmware. Now I am wondering if it is possible to switch them back—meaning attach WRTP45G to my original router and still get Voip. In another words, I just want to use the Voice portion of the WRTP54G.
Is it possible? Anyone? |

yeah...but why waste time with a post and wait 2 hours for a reply? you could just unplug a couple things and know in about 30 seconds... |

I did. The phone line seems to work ONLY if the wireless AP is activiated. I was hoping to shut down the wireless functions in order to lower the temperture of the hot-running router (WRTP54G). Kinda of strange! |

Yes, I can repeat this experiment: No Wireless; No Voice.
Not knowing what to disable in the WRTP54G, I left the Automatic Configuration-DHCP On and DHCP Server Enabled. With this configuration, the voice line is dead if Wireless is not Enabled.
So I am back to square one, I am really try to find a way to lower the operation temperature of this router. I will try to assigin a static IP address to this router and see if I can disable the Wireless function. If not, I may have to fashion a 8mm fan to cool off this router. |

Even the outside surface of the case is hot, especially the back/bottom side. The temperature inside must be even hotter. It is sitting in open space. Let's say this WRTP54G is hotter than my other WRT54G and the cable modem put together. I am new to this router and have not seen any bad effects with this high temperature.

If you want to connect the wrtp to another router, just turn off the DCHP server on the WRTP and configure the WRTP LAN address be on the same ip network as the other router. Plug an ethernet cable from other router into the LAN connection. The Voice part should work as well as the rest of the LAN ports and wireless bridge. This makes the WRTP into a LAN switch and wireless access point with your other router doing all the work. You may have to play with DNS settings. Joe |

XJJoe01: have you actually tested that? On the other routers, you can't connect to Vonage through the LAN port. |

I have never tried it with the voice part. The only reason this may not work is the ata in the wrtp will need a gateway address. If we can figure out how to manually assign the ata an address, this will work the same as a PAP-2 ata.
For regular network, this works all the time. I will try this in a few days.
