I'm trying to understand how to setup Vonage service using DSL as a trial of the service before I dump my phone company for Vonage and switch to cable. I saw the article for home wiring setup where all the phones in the house remain connected to the phone jacks in the house and a computer and DSL modem are connected to one of the phone jacks in house. What I don't understand is do I or not disconnect the phone lines from the outside of the house and if I do then I wouldn't expect the DSL service to remain active. If I don't then how do I know if my phone service is originating from the phone company or from Vonage? Any clarification would be helpful. Thanks. |

You would probably have to run an independent line out to the box for the DSL modem. Then you can disconnect the house wiring without losing the DSL. |

Well unless you use a service like OneLink from Speakeasy.net, I think you must have some level of service from the phone company. Whether that is your telco's most basic no frills service, or they charge a small fee for dsl without phone, I don't know.
I am using a DSL service called OneLink from Speakeasy. They give you a direct DSL line without the phone company, which also provides a better quality DSL line, without any telephone line noise to filter out.

I do not know if your DSL provider offers the same thing. And of course if you get DSL through your phone company you may be under some longterm contract.
I do have one favor to ask, if you do look into Speakeasy and sign up, please let me know or mention my username "xo" as a referral. We'll both get a credit for it. Or use this link to sign up: http://www.speakeasy.net/refer/234393
Now I'm a Vonage newbie so someone here please correct me if I'm wrong. But to the other part of your question you'll know that you're using Vonage not your telephone company for making calls, because your telephone will be hooked up to an adapter which is hooked to your modem. Your telephone will no longer be going straight into your wall phone jack.
(I will be happy to edit this post if it is incorrect or violates forum rules). |
