PostPosted: Wed Jul 20, 2005 10:15 am    Post subject: Analog modem success! (RT31P2) Reply with quote Back to top

For no particular reason, I've been experimenting with analog modem usage with Vonage. There are still some dial-up BBSs that I'd like to call, maybe that's why. Or maybe it's just because I grew up in the '80s and think modems are cool.

My initial successes were scant. I got a no-name v.32 modem working at a noisy 2400 bps. I couldn't get the Lucent v.92 Winmodem in my Pentium 200MMX laptop to connect at all via Voip.

On a lark, last night I tried it on my unknown-manufacturer Winmodem in my Athlon 64 notebook, and damned if it didn't work!

I connected to a US Robotics V.Everything modem on my Linux server in my basement. I originated the call from my Voip line; the USR was connected to my analog line. My Voip is 647 area code (Toronto, ON, CA) and my landline is 306 (Regina, SK, CA), so the call was routed a fair distance.

Not only did it connect fine... it did so at full v.34 speeds (33,600 up, 33,600 down) which is tough to do on an analog to analog connection, let alone Voip to analog. There were some block retransmissions and some retrains, but nothing ridiculous. I didn't notice any troubles while I used the connection, and I had it active for about fifteen minutes. The only thing I noticed that was a little unusual was that there was a little latency; I was connected to a Linux shell and there was a noticeable delay after typing things before the characters appeared. I type very fast though. The delay was not that annoying, actually.

I used a dial prefix of *99W (W waits for the second dialtone). I don't know if that is necessary since I use the lowest compression for my Voip service already, but I thought I would put it in since it is minimally bothersome to do.

I am going to try a v.90 connection tonight to see if I can get faster than 33.6kbps. I don't think I will, but I didn't think I'd get 33.6.

My ISP is Access Communications (cablemodem; 6 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up), although that shouldn't matter.

Jim

When was your initial attempt? I had tried dialup back in January, and it wouldn't work at any speed. I tried again in June, and it connected at 44k, but died after 30 seconds or so. When I dropped the modem to V.34, it connected at a solid 28.8 and stayed until I disconnected. I think a recent firmware update (3.1.3 voice version, maybe?) made the line more data-friendly.

I did notice quite a bit of latency (600ms pings to google), but the raw connection speed was better than the 26.4k maximum on my old analog line.

Has anyone tried the reverse? In theory, I think Vonage's lowest bitrate might work on a good dial-up, but not sure if the TCP/IP & V.92 overhead would kill it.

My initial attempts were a few weeks ago. I haven't tried the one modem again but I certainly can. My most recent failed attempts were just a couple of days ago. I suspect dialup via Voip is very picky about modem quality - perhaps the modem in my new notebook is pretty good. The V.Everything I have answering the landline is as good as modems get.
