Hi all,

I’ve been experiencing the same problems as many others have. Having read all the posts in this forum, and also FINALLY getting through to tech support after a week (they didn’t respond to trouble tickets and I had to threaten to cancel after hours on hold), I’ve implemented all the proper port forwarding settings.

Here’s my setup:

1.5 MB down/256k up Sprint ADSL line->Sprint (Zyxel) 645 Series DSL modem -> Dell Truemobile 2300 Wireless Router -> Motorola ATA -> Panasonic 2.4 GHz Cordless phone (set to a channel that doesn’t conflict with WiFi)

Vonage had me setup a static IP on the Motorola, and all the right ports are forwarded. They also set my fax settings to 3 packets rather than 2, which now allows me to use my fax line (it never worked before)

But I still have major problems. Here’s the scoop:

Incoming calls either take my network down completely, or they knock down the router. No pattern to it (for instance, I’m on a conference call now which rang to me, but I’m typing this in Word as it took down only my router). Sometimes I’ll hang up the call and everything comes right back up. Also, voice quality is really spotty at times, and sometimes calls just go to my NAN number, even when everything’s “working” here. Outgoing calls are OK, but sometimes using flash to switch to a call waiting call will drop the original call. I know bandwidth is not an issue because I’ve tested it ad nauseum, and Sprint has tested my line from the CO and at my house. I get 150KB up, no problem, and close to 1.5 down.

The same things happened when I had my Motorola in front of the router. Also, they happen when I unplug all of the cordless phones in my house and switch to a corded phone.

Is anyone suffering from the same thing? Have any ideas?

I have a Linksys wired router I could throw into the mix if it would help in ANY way.

Thanks so much in advance for any help you guys can provide. Vonage tech support SWEARS everything should work.

I was going to suggest that you put your ATA device in front of the router, but I see that you've already done that.

I came across your post as I'm planning on purchasing a Zyxel 645 modem/router as well and worried that because it was not simply a modem that it might cause problems

Why don't you just try Zyxel 645-ATA-phone configuration and see what happens? Then add on other items (like PC) once you've got the Voip solution sorted.

I might also try the Linksys wired router or even a 'straight' modem and see if it works (i.e. modem-ATA-phone...with the computer plugging into one of the ATA ports...)..

Can it be a defective ATA device then?

Tell us how you make out, in any case...

You could 'assist' me, please. Very Happy

Are there any known problems using Vonage with the Zyxel 645 modem/router ?

If there are, could you advise what you consider to be the 'best' or 'most compatable' modem for Vonage use.

Many Thanks,

AT

Hi,

I have not heard any specific issues related to the Zyxel 645 modem/router. I have heard of the Motorola being a bandwidth hog and people loosing their internet with the Motorola first even though the web site says to put it that way.

I suggest you use a Linksys31p2 or PAP2 instead. RT31p2 has QOS which can manage the network bandwidth better.

Did you get your device retail or from the website?

Thanks VB,

I am a Canadian customer and was sent the Linksys Rt3 1p2 (by Vonage Canada, with my signup) to my Canadian address, but am now using it in Seoul, Korea with a Motorola io Cable Modem DM-100.

I was asking about the Zyxel 645 modem/router as this is the one our isp uses in Thailand (where my wife is, ...and I'll be sending her Linksys Rt3 1p2 unit to make calls from there shortly).

FYI, my Vonage calls from Korea to the US and Canada (to regular land lines) have been amazingly good. My calls to Thailand, however, have not been.

I have, however, spoken to a Vonage user in Thailand (Chiang Mai) who indicates his Vonage unit, that he uses from within Thailand, works quite well...

One last question, (while I've hopefully I've still got your ear Very Happy ), is there any loss of quality using a combination modem router (such as the Zyxel 645), as compared to using a straight modem (i.e. modem-ATA-phone)?

Cheers,

Alex

Only thing I have come across with combo modems is that either they dont play nice or in an extreme case have to be swicthed to "bridge" mode.

Most of the tiume they work fine.

I just keep coming back blah blah don't I, hehe?

Is there any concensus as to what is the best performing stand-alone modem with Vonage?

If so, that's the one I'm getting. Very Happy

I feel lucky enough that I escaped major problems after recieving an Rt31p2, and I'm not looking to push it.

May as well do it right the first time. Worker

several people who replaced their toshiba pcx1100u went with the motorola sb5100 and are happy with it.
it has a lot to do with what your isp will allow though.
