You have to order it from the UK to get it, and use a US power supply, but there you go folks! The end of the "locked device" issue...

Rolling Eyes The "tyranny" of locked device has been crushed! Rolling Eyes

EDIT: Please note this thread has a tone of sarcasm to it...

Um... yeah, That solves nothing. People are mad because they can't unlock a device that they already bought.

Anyone who wanted an unlocked device to begin with could always just buy a Sipura.

I know, it was sarcastic....
Also, if there is anyone doing research on the issue before they sign up, etc, then they may find it and it will be one less post we see on here again about the issue, when in reality it is Linksys's device, not Vonage's.

Yes, but Vonage made the decision partner with linksys. This smacks of Bell's CPE phones from the 70's. Remember having to go to the Bell store to pickup a phone? Locking sure keeps dumbasses from breaing their boxes and ensures QOS. This is one less call to the helpdesk. Vonage should offer a developer's kit that has a tftp server and binaries for those who would like to experiment with their CPE ATA devices from Linksys. Oh, well Sipura is a good option. I would like to see a virtual ATA to use with an Asterisk type setup.

It appears that you cannot update the firmware on it or it will be locked again. Also wouldnt Vonage push new firmware to you? Then you would be screwed anyway. Although I do remember there being a setting to turn off auto updates.

that setting is irrelevant as far as Vonage goes. it's for remote administration/update of the router from a personal level. Vonage can push whatever, whenever, despite any router settings.

Well, from a locked state, of course. Not true, once you've unlocked it in the first place, and configured it properly. There's another setting for "remote provisioning" (at least on the PAP2's for which the "code has been broken" and many are being unlocked. You can turn off remote provisioning and Vonage cannot touch your device. Of course, you can also delete the Vonage tftp server address.

something you had laying around the house, Kev?

But anyway, I don't see what the fuss about unlocking devices is, I really don't. You can buy devices that are not set up for any provider - are they way more expensive or something? Hard to come by? People just want to feel like 133t Haxorz and say "HAHA look d00d, this is supposed to be a Vonage device...but NOW, it's on Suncrocket!!!!! WAHAHAAHAAAA!!! Hey, you wanna see the Dreamcast in the garage that's running Linux?"

If you don't want to use Vonage...don't buy one of their devices...

If you bought a Vonage device but now want to use it with another provider...too bad.

All the time calls come in and people want things like the proxy addresses, passwords, TFTP server addresses, they want their voice tab unlocked, they want decompiled versions of the softphone and click to call, they want to use all kinds of old PBX and Audix gear and God knows what else. And the answer is always a resounding "NAY"

if you can figure it out on your own, awesome, let people know, spread the info around - it just means it'll get patched faster.

You want to impress me? Figure out a way to log onto someone elses account and make calls on their dime.

Well, yes they ARE way more expensive and VERY hard to come by. Why? Because Vonage, as Linksys' largest customer for the devices, strongarmed Linksys into taking the unlocked devices off the market. You USED to be able to buy new, unlocked Linksys Voip routers, but no more. You still occasionally can see online ads for the "-NA" or "-UK" unlocked versions, but only until its called to Linksys' attention (by Vonage). Now let me first say, I'm a happy Vonage customer, and have no desire to try to set up my own device with some other service. The amount of work it would take to end up with telephone service likely less reliable and less seamless than Vonage offers, just isn't worth it. HOWEVER, I am VERY much against Vonage working to make unlocked versions of the same (third party) hardware unavailable to those who would wish to buy and use it for other Voip uses, and that's exactly what's happened with the Linksys RTP300 & WRTP54G, and the RT31P2, WRT54GP2 & PAP2 before them.

Unless it happens to be a PAP2, for which the unlocking instructions are widely known now.

Ah, but that would be theft of service and committing a fraudulent act. Unlocking an adapter which Vonage's own Terms of Service says belongs to the subscriber, in order to use it for another purpose, is a WHOLE different situation, now isn't it?

Vonage Terms of Service wrote:
2.13 Ownership and Risk of Loss. You will own the Device and bear all risk of loss of, theft of, casualty to or damage to the Device, from the time it is shipped to you until the time (if any) when it is returned to us in accordance with this Agreement.

The "if any" above, refers to the subscriber's option to return the unit in lieu of the $39.99 cancellation fee during the first 12 months. After that 12 months, the ToS make it clear that the ownership of the adapter is clearly and unequivocally with the subscriber, so unlocking it is entirely within their right, no matter what has to be done to it.
