it sure does - and of course, I don't advocate any theft of service or other chicanery.

Sorry all for bringing this from the murky depths, but I just wanted to comment. All of the whiners out there that complain that "VoIP isn't as good as POTS" and "Well, you don't see any support forums for POTS do you?", Vonage had a good idea for locking these devices; it's called configuration management. It's not in place for the geeky, nerdy, or otherwise too-smart people, I include myself. This is for joe-blow guy that wants to save money by switching to Vonage, doesn't know a lick of networking, and thinks a PAP is a test a woman has done. Rather than allow MR Joe-Blow access to stuff he can really screw up and make his service not work, they lock it down. By and large, I think it's a good thing. Would I want to screw with all the stuff in there? Hell, yes! But I'm content with the fact if I can't touch them, they'll probably never need fixing, unless the service provider does it. Some people just thrive on unlocking stuff they're not supposed to, like cable boxes, routers, game consoles, etc. They're probably the same people that whine about their "horrible Vonage experience." Sorry for the rant, but enough is enough. Configuration management is more important for the health of a service than hackers trying to "bust it up" just to say they did.

Now that was a good one navydavy2001. Thank for bringing it up. I needed a chuckle this AM!

I'd love an unlocked device, if only to be able to load a startup script to affect the router side of the WRTP54G, and perhaps to be able to lower the volume to something reasonable without having to call CS.

But I can fully understand why Vonage doesn't want me in the innards of the beast. If it bricks now, there's little I could have done to cause it. If I can mess with it, I can break it, then there's the tears and recriminations to deal with when we figure out whose fault it is that the router/adapter went "ports up". Wink

I WOULD like to see some options for volume, and some of the other "reasonable" changes that wouldn't kill the adapter if I messed them up.

I agree on having access to more harmless settings like volume and such. It would actually be in Vonage's best interests to allow that, since I'm sure the support call cost savings of people calling for something that mundane would probably be worth it.

heh..that would be nice...
Having them locked saves the casual person from dicking around with the settings, and turning his nice new adapter into a brick.

I agree with you there, I think there is a happy medium to be found. Access to too much will just their calls go up because someone f'd with something they knew nothing about. But giving a little could save a few calls to CS.

Those are all good points, but where do you draw the line! Every night I have someone call in because they dicked around with the settings in their phone, and it stopped working. But every other night I get someone calling in and being choked that they can't change a setting in their phone...

When is it enough access, and when is it too much? It really depends on the user level, and unfortunately, I would guess that majority would assume that they know what is going on...
They do to a degree, just enough to be dangerous. They figure out how one thing works, and think that they can fix everything, and next thing you know...

Awesome picture! I think the right level of access can be determined by a)What options would absolutely destroy a device/service versus b)What options could the user manipulate, not destroy the device/service, but maybe screw up simple things like echo and volume, which could easily be fixed by coming here and investigating. People have said, "Well, POTS doen't need a support forum." Well, no ****, it was introduced over 100 years ago. Ya think people figured out how to punch a button yet? Voip is a little more complex, but when it matures fully, it WILL BE the standard.
