I am currently having a home built. I would like to use Vonage service when I move and I would like to use the method of plugging Vonage into one phone jack and having the service available on all the others.

When I only see one phone wire going to the outside of my house where the access box will be if I get standard phone, is it safe to assume that all the phone jacks are connected together?

Do I need to do anything to terminate that one wire, or can I just stuff it back in the wall?

Assuming the the wiring has already been done, All of the jacks in the home are in some way inter-connected.

I would NOT stuff the wire back into the wall. The telephone company will put a customer access point on the outside of your house where that wire exits and you will be able to unplug your wiring from the outside world at that point.

If no box gets installed, just coil up the wire and leave it there. The next owner of the home may want "regular" telephone service.

The above is also know as a NIB (Network Interface Box) or Demarc(ation) point there is usually a small disconnect jack that is unplugged here.

Speak to your builder or company building your house and make sure they don't cheap out and install minimal amount of jacks.

You may even want to pay extra to have network or 2 line jacks installed prior to the walls going up where YOU WANT THEM instead their standard locations.

It is always best to have Telephone / LAN jacks terminate at the same location so if you later decide to get DSL service you can place the modem directly beside the LAN wiring and place only one filter on the phone line after the modem but before it is distributed through out the rest of the house.

There are some phones (Venture) which make use of line 1 for an intercom between stations so you will always want line 1 constant in all of your jacks and have line 2 (yellow/Black or Orange/white) pre-wired just in case you purchase the above or any other 2 line phone.

I was able to place the jacks where I want them.
I asked about wired networking and it was cost prohibitive from our builder.

As far as the NIB goes, If I never order service from the regular phone company, will they even install one? If they don't, I don't want to have that cable hanging outside, I'll put it back in the wall.
And actually, I want to use the hole my builder already made for the phone line to run my cable modem line into the house.

You are probably right, the NIB is more likely to be installed by your local Bell not the builder.
(any comments from Bell Canada or Entourage employees or any other Telco?)
