When I signed up for my Vonage service I was sent the Linksys RT31P2. To ease my home network setup and avoid the 2 router setup I purchased the Linksys WRT54GP2 to combine my wireless and Voip into a single device.

But what I did like about the RT31P2 was its portability. I could easily set it up when I traveled to have my Vonage service go with me. Now, I would have to either take down my home wireless network and take extra precautions to disable the wireless when abroad or call Vonage and have them manually change the MAC address associated with my service to the RT31P2 each time I travel.

I think that a great feature would be to have a screen in the "My Account" section of the Vonage site that would allow me to manually set which MAC address my service routes to in much the same way that I can set an alternate phone number to forward to. That way I can leave my home wireless network intact and don't have to bother calling Vonage support to change it each time I travel.

After getting a non-retail activation, and then buying a PAP2 for redundancy, I was able to switch from the RT31P2 to the PAP2 by using the Retail Activation link at http://vonage.com, selecting "add a line to an existing account", logging in, entering the new MAC address, and selecting "move an existing line". However, it now won't let me use the same method to switch back. It gives an "invalid MAC address" when I enter the router MAC address. Presumably it's rigged up to not allow entering a MAC address for one of their non-retail devices. I don't know if they have a good reason for this, if not it would be simple to fix.

I doubt it is a case of excluding non-retail devices so much as there was never a need to include them in the first place. They probably got a range of addresses of the units destined for retail sale directly from the manufacturer.

In that case, they should add them to the database of allowed MACs. I signed up originally as a non-retail customer, and the RT31P2 failed after 10 days (I gather from the forums that this is common). I realized that I needed an extra device for redundancy, and bought one. Hopefully, if the PAP2 fails, I'll be able to contact Vonage via the website to get the RT31P2 enabled, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Try the "Retail Activation" on the Vonage Home Page as follows:

(1) Select Current Customer Login / Add a Vonage retail device to my account and login using your username.

(2) Select "I purchased a Vonage phone adapter that I want to add to my account".

(3) Select "Move existing line(s) to a new device".

(4) Now enter the MAC address for the new device.

This should do the trick though I'm uncertain if Vonage correlates the Mac address to a device and rejects certain ones. Good luck!

Ok, the thing is the following, when you've already activated the device. That device gets into your account, and is in our database of phone adapters which are already in use.
Then the only way to change de MAC ID - until we get new ways to do it- is just calling the CS support, and from there we can just change the MAC whenever you want.
