Well, that's certainly a Vonage thing, not you connection. And I voicemail should happen directly on the Vonage server.

We're mainly using the Vonage line as an extra incoming line for our phone system (line 3), so we don't use it so much. But I've tested it, having conversations while running a DSL speed test, and I can guarantee that the bandwidth management works. Not a single hickup, even with a maxed out DSL connection.

Does the wrt54 do its QoS the same way as the Vigor? The QoS is more important to me overall because I've been using some vpn workarounds since I lost my router anyway. Iow, if I don't need a vpn capable router, what are the other good/popular options for a QoS capable router? (Though I'm still leaning towards the Vigor . . . my income tax refund just won't be as plentiful as I thought.)

The WRT54GL does a quite excellent job of QoS, once you get it set up properly.

The current WRT54G and WRT54GS are OK units, from what I understand, but they recently went through a hardware conversion and a change from the old Linux units to a new VxWorks-based unit, and the new "v5" hardware is something I haven't used, and have heard very mixed results on.

I have the older "v4" hardware, which has been rebranded as the WRT54GL (L = Linux), and I recommend it highly for the under-$100 price point. QoS is SOLID on these units, especially with aftermarket firmware that can really take advantage of the Linux core of the units. You do have to spend the time getting the aftermarket firmware on there, and properly configuring the QoS. But once they are up and running, they just run. has them for about $75, I think.

Comcast Cable (3m down / 256k up) -> Linksys BEFCMU10 v2 (DOCSIS 1.0) -> WRT54G v4 ("Tomato" firmware) -> the rest of my network including a WRTP54G (Firmware: 5.01.04)

QoS Victory!
I got my Draytek Vigor 2900G setup. I still do not have a LAN-LAN VPN tunnel going yet. I am waiting now to get another Vigor 2900G for the other end. I am very confident that the LAN-LAN VPN will work since there is nothing but the cable modems in between our tunnel.

But, I did get the QoS stuff working like a champ. I have the RTP300 behind my Vigor 2900G with a fixed IP. I setup the QoS to give a priority to that specific IP and it works very well. I gave it about 40% priority. I figured doing the fixed IP thing was better than calling out a range of 10,000 ports for RTP audio traffic.

I am very pleased with the Vigor 2900G so far. All the settings and features are a little overwhelming, but that's what it takes to get it done. The QoS statistics page is awesome. To test I sent an email with a big attachment and watched the statistics. The bandwidth reserved for the fixed IP phone modem was holding it's own while the other traffic was using what was left. Awesome!

Thanks again Per for finding a good VPN router with QoS features!

Now hopefully I can recover my costs eventually after all the time spent on this issue (I am ashamed to say the amount of time).
