PostPosted: Sat Jul 16, 2005 9:45 am    Post subject: Service choppy and delayed, D/L & U/L speeds good Reply with quote Back to top

According to the speed test I had the following results

Download 3,004,304 bps
Upload 478,680 bps
QOS 56%
RTT 100 ms
MaxPause 296 ms

Why is my quality of service so poor. The voice is delayed, sometimes there is a high pitch beep, and sometimes it will send the call directly to my cell phone even though the service is working. My upload and download speeds consistent at different times of the day but the QOS is rarely above 60% it averages around 40%.

Please help! My wife is hounding me to cancel this service. I know there has to be a solution. Here is my connection setup:

WOW cable using a Webstar Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 modem connected to a Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2 router with the latest update. A Linksys PAP2 Phone adapter is connected to the router.

Is there any special router settings I need to make or any suggestions to improve service?

Get more detailed diagnostics about your Voip connection by running the test at www.testyourvoip.com. Post your results here.

I assume your PC is connected to the Linksys BEFW11S?

Is there anything running on the PC(s) in your local network that may be interfering with your traffic? e.g. game servers, bittorrent, viruses/worms?

Here are the results. I have nothing running on my computer that would interfere with my traffic. The problem occurs with the computer on or off.

Wow! These results are squeaky clean. I wish mine were this good. These results are completely inconsistent with the ones in your first post. In those the MaxPause 296 ms is a killer. Your latency in these latest results looks OK. This one is a puzzler.

Are your calls always bad? These readings are telling me that you should be having good calls.

A couple of suggestions:
1. Experiment 1: Connect your PAP2 directly to the cable modem and obviously leave everything else disconnected. This will eliminate all/most local network issues.
2. Search this forum for 'pingplotter'. Set this up on your PC and let it run for a day. Post results here.

The outgoing media delay is quite possibly just an answer delay from the Boston connection. Re-testing may see that delay go down. In any event there was no packet loss reported which was what I was looking for.
