This one goes out to all the people who dream big, and then wanna go back when it doesn't quite work out as expected... So I signed up for Vonage this spring when I moved to another city, and they assigned me a new number. After a few months of use I decided to switch to SBC. My wife put up a fuss about changing the number, so I asked SBC to do a transfer. This morning, approximately 5 weeks after making the call, the number was successfully transferred.
I followed the standard procedure to make the transfer: called up SBC, gave them the number and asked for a port, kept my Vonage account open, and waited.
My request did get rejected once, apparently someone's mistake at whatever company handles that. A second request was approved later. After the transfer, I got a call from an SBC tech who wanted to make sure the line was operative. She said that they had trouble getting everything working, and the normal automatic switch didn't work for some reason.
In summary, my personal experience shows that it is possible to port out a Vonage assigned number. However, like all transfers from land line phones to Voip, don't expect it to happen quickly or without any bumps. Best of luck to all you Vonage people, maybe I'll be back in the future! |
