Hello everyone!
I just got my service all hooked up tonight, and so far, so good, except for a weird thing with the (413) area code.
Local people (in my area code) who dial my full number with the 413 get a recording telling them my number is "not in service."
Huh? But when they dial just the last 7 digits, the calls go through no problem. Is this the way Vonage is set up for everyone in the USA?
Are the calls placed by locals to me therefore free for them?
Thanks for your help! Sarah |

Thats what you get for living out that far! Did you bring your old number over to Vonage? How far away are they trying to call you from within 413? Go Sox! |

Ha! Well, I am kinda out in cow country but not too bad... after all, I have broadband Wired on the backs of cows but...
I got a new number (was glad to lose my old after getting on some PITA calling lists.)
This arose from someone calling me from about 10 miles away, a couple towns over. But I think it might have gone away, because I tried calling myself from work in the same problem town, and it worked both with 10 and 7-digit dialing. With 11 digit, it said 'your call cannot be completed as dialed.' Not the same as the number not working!
Methinks original caller to me was confused? Maybe. Or the issue solved itself.
But I AM still curious if the calls are now free for all callers in my area code to call me, since usually dialing 10 digits counts as an in-state long distance call or however it is termed. Seems odd that Vonage would create something to give money breaks to other people who don't subscribe...
p.s. Woohoo, GO SOX! (Who's your daddy now?) |

if they are dialling w/o a 1 it should not cost them LD charges...
what city is your number from within the 413? is that city a local call to your friends? Since they do not have to dial it with a 1 they will not get charged, esp if they are dialling it with just 7 digits..
maybe when they called before, your number was not all the way set up yet, or they were dialling a neighbouring area code that doesn't have your same 7 digit number, so they didn't get the wrong person.. just a recording saying their call could not be completed.. |

Dabones:
My number before was a in-state toll call for them. We did not get a lot of free call room out here Pretty much, it was free if it was in the same town, period. Anything else, toll call.
I'm going with the idea that my number was not 100% firmed up heh! (Who the heck knows really?) As long as it works now, I'm happy, and if it is free now for close-by family and friends to call, even better!
