I get those DTMF tones on some incoming calls. My girlfriend's voice sets them off once in a while. It really doesn't bug me at all, but there seem to be a lot of people here who get annoyed immensely by this feature.
I have SimulRing set up on my Vonage account. Calls are rung to my house and my cell phone. Here is what I have noticed:
Calls that are made to my Vonage line and which I pick up on my cell phone are still susceptible to the DTMF tones. This makes some sense. It verifies that forwarded calls are still being carried on Vonage's network. It also, I think, rules out the problem being in our home equipment. This is most likely a problem with Vonage's equipment.
I'm not complaining, just thought some here would be interested |

It is my understanding that it is actually a problem/limitation with the CODEC which means it could occur on either end. Since DTMF tones aren't send as part of the audio stream but as a separate message and then recreated at the far end, when the side digitizing the caller makes a mistake the tone is generated on your end. If your side makes a mistake, the caller would hear it. You could test this out by having your GF call you from your Vonage line. However I believe that the Vonage side has a harder job because the call has already been carried over a POTS or mobile network which may have had its own analog/digital conversions with different CODECs thus adding who knows what kinds of distortion to the source audio. |
